Just bought a model 1 and it came with 2 standard controllers. Neither seem to work very well, the directions are fine but buttons 1 & 2 either don't respond or require a lot of pressing. I plugged my control stick into the same port on the console and that works perfectly so has to be the pads. Is there anything I can do?

This is a general cleaning technique I use for rubber-dome buttons...
1. Open it up 2. Look for gunk. Clean gunk if found. 3. Gently use a pencil eraser on the circuit board part of the button 4. Put the rubber dome on a bit of paper, push it down gently and slide across the paper. This will rub some of the carbon pad onto the paper, so be gentle. What remains should be as good as new.
Some people like to replace the rubber domes but that will totally change the button feel.

I opened one up and gave all the boards and wires a good wipe down with isopropryl (I usually use it for cleaning metal cart contacts because it evaporates so quickly), pad started working perfectly
