I did spend a bit of time with Chuck Rock 1 last week but thought it was pretty poor Sounds like 2 is much better.

Here is a part of the game with some of my favourite levels to see (Wacky Waterfalls & Fruit Mountain):

2 is graphically and musically better but 1 has better gameplay. Both have a lot of cheap deaths, but 2 is kiddy-level easy due to its late release.

2 is graphically and musically better This is unfair because Chuck 1 has practically no music except a title theme

2 is graphically and musically better This is unfair because Chuck 1 has practically no music except a title theme Chuck Rock really suffers for the lack of music, especially since the title screen music is so good. Along with the black backgrounds and slow pace really makes the game feel 'empty' for the lack of a better word. Its a game with interesting style of play, and as much as I've tried to like it I just get bored and frustrated with it. I think some music would have gone a long way to help breathe a bit more energy into the game, I know you could just put on a CD or something, but its not the same!

I like dragons trap but maybe because i got it later (never owned it as a kid) it just dosn't have the same appeal for me as monster land does but still an excellent game.

Monster Land does have a certain magical feeling about it. I haven't played The Dragon's Trap yet, but I definitely want to. Ryuichi Nishizawa, the director of the series, said that The Dragon's Trap is his personal favorite.

I really tried to get into Dragon´s Trap, but I have some problems with the game. It has great music, awesome graphics in general and a good gameplay, but the story.. There is one thing that a Wonder Boy game needs: Role playing. In Monster Land & Monster World, you can talk to the people to get hints where to go next. But in Dragon´s Trap, there is absolutely nothing. You never know what to do next, and that´s very frustrating. I´ve never beaten Dragon´s Trap for that reason and honestly, I don´t know how all the Master System fans like it THAT much^^

I´ve never beaten Dragon´s Trap for that reason and honestly, I don´t know how all the Master System fans like it THAT much^^ I strongly disagree, I have a quite opposite impression of Dragons Trap compared to you guys maybe also because it's one of the games I owned and completed as a kid. I actually think Dragons Trap is far better than Monster Land & Monster World. I like the gameplay, music, characters, monsters etc. a lot more, and to me it just seems like a more polished game compared to the others. Somehow I'm also quite pleased that there is not much dialogue or instructions to go on (apart from the description in the beginning and after defeating Meka dragon) - there is a mysticism about it, and when you discover a new world I remember being all like "Wooooah! What is this place?!" - besides, there's not a whole lot of dialogue in Monster Land to begin with, and even if there is more, it matters very little in terms of it being a more RPG'ish game compared to Dragons Trap, if you take into account what game Monster Land is as a whole. Monster Land has a strict, linear progression, with a "Level Complete" screen after going through each level, with no chance of going back. (That's probably why it's an arcade game as well) In Dragons Trap there is possibility to roam freely (No freakin' timer!), explore, and to some extent choose what areas to visit in what order, and revisit them after progression to get gold and items, eventhough you must eventually proceed to the next world to advance the story. ... oh yeah and perhaps the strongest argument - Dragons Trap has a flexible inventory! Not just upgrades and usable items. You can actually choose what armor, sword and shield to use, thus adapting to your situation to minimize environmental damage and maximize damage/survivability. Although I'd say that both games are platformers with RPG elements, rather than RPG's, Dragons Trap has far more RPG value than Monster Land.

No problem dude. If we take a look at all Wonder Boy games, they are all different and I guess it was the plan of the developers. The first game based on prehistoric sceneries. Monster Land is a round based adventure with some role playing aspects. In Dragon´s Trap, those RPG aspects where removed as well as the round based concept, which was changed with an open world style one. Monster World combines RPG elements with that open world concept, while the last game has a female character. The spin-off Dragon´s Lair is a shooter. I think that´s the reason why so many Wonder Boy fans hold debates about the "best game", but in fact, they are all great. As we were kids, we had all the time in the world, even during school years. But now I am a collector with hundreds of games and I want to play most of them. That means I haven´t the patience and time to play games like Dragon´s Trap for weeks/months, which is a shame. Maybe many of us need that patience back now and if some guys are not looking for a full PAL set, it´s a wise decision^^

I'm surprised Zillion isn't getting any love. It's a fantastic game with great title music. I worked by butt off beating that game (which wasn't that much work, considering I didn't start working then).
Two others that come to mind that I don't remember that well are Kenseiden and Kung Fu Kid. I remember the first one being cool but wickedly hard. KFK I remember being like a more polished version of My Hero, but I could be mistaken. It's been like 25 years.
