Perhaps the best deal I got was £1 on James Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing. I got it from Leigh Gamestation, It is a place I used to check regularly and for several weeks there had been no change to their SMS stock. I nearly didnt check on this occassion but distinctly remember thinking 'well you never know..' I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it!
My 2nd best deal was getting the Air Rescue early box art cover. I got it from another collector via this forum for £50. Now I had recently bought over £1000 of other items from him, all of which were reasonable to good prices, so I think his was his way of saying thanks and also knowing I wasn't going to flip it for a profit on ebay. I've no idea how much it is worth but as i've never seen another I would expect a fair bit more than £50.
I would like to add a nearly great deal. At the start if my collecting I found an SMSII version of Sonic 2 in Wigan Gamestation. I wanted to buy Sonic 2 and noticed they had about 4 copies, one of which looked a fair bit different, however I just went with the one that was in the best condition! It was a few weeks later I realised my big mistake and when I checked back in it had gone! This next bit could be coincidence but another forum member who lives a few miles away from me, more towards Wigan, obtained an SMSII Sonic 2 locally (cannot remember the circumstances) a year or so later. Maybe the same one from whoever bought it in Gamestation.. They seem to be so rare that I think it's quite likely.

I think I know who the other guy is, he lives roughly inbetween the two of us doesnt he?
Anyway the story behind power strike 2: I had owned a master system for a week or so, maybe less. I knew some games were worth a fair bit more than others, and I had just put the ebay app on my phone, the only rarity list i had was a text file which i kept a link to on my phone, it was very primative, just 'common, uncommon, rare, very rare, extremely rare' but without as much accuracy as on here or on retrocollect.
i remember seeing power strike 2 and thinking it looked cool, my trail of thought was it looked like one of the rare ones and i discreetly checked my phone, bidding was up to £25 on a copy, i bought it and a couple of other games, practicing by best poker face. laura had ordered something from another shop and was collecting it, when she saw that i had a cash generator bag she looked at me like i was about to say i had bought some magic beans, when i told her power strike 2 was up to £25 on an auction she understood why i bought it I knew it was a decent find and mentioned it on here, not expecting to be believed, luckily i was.
I also nearly got a cart only copy of buggy run in a bundle, foolishly i asked him how much he wanted for it seperatly, he then checked ebay D'OH

In my years of collecting I've had 2 really great deals, both at boot sales. The first one was in October 2007. I know this as I managed to find my original post about it on SMS Power! I came across a box of gaming bits and bobs in what was pretty much a skip. In there I saw an odd-looking SMS cart and knew straight away I had found some treasure. It turned out that the cart, along with 2 others in the box, had pad testing ROMs. I think I paid about £15 for the box (but probably could have got it for less). There were some sealed Road Avenger games for the Mega CD in there as well which I still have. My other great deal was in 2011 when I found the uber rare SMSII variant of Sonic 2 for £1. Original post is here: shinobiman.proboards.com/post/85224/thread. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. I don't think that deal will ever be topped, not for me anyway.

Was checking email records a while back and found I got a boxed, complete Pro Action Replay in great condition for £1.44! The story is boring - it was an ebay buy which everyone must have forgot to bid on as even back then it was probably worth £10-15 or so.
Rupert, was that off Onyx? He was the only person I can recall having that cover variant, or were more found?

That's some serious rarities, there.

I've had loads of great deals over the years, like a complete Masters of Combat for £3.20, but that was back in 2007 when collecting for the SMS was a bit more "niche" and bargains were easier to be found (that was still a £30-35 game at that time so I was happy). However, the one that really sticks out in my mind was in December 2010 when I found myself with a few minutes to spare between Christmas and New Year and quickly checked all my saved searches - I certainly didn't expect to find a brand new copy of Les Schtroumpfs Autour du Monde for £17! Like many collectors I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I would never own a full PAL set until I stumbled upon this. I think the best bit was that I got a series of PMs from members here congratulating me, without a trace of jealousy or bitterness. It's in times like those that I remember that collecting is as much about the community as about our personal collections. I'm a little bit deflated with the current state of collecting, eBay, etc., but hopefully this thread will help me to get my appetite back.

I know exactly what you mean Barney, if this thread makes one person think fondly about how collecting can be done when its done properly (like on here) then its been more then worthwhile.
I had much the same experience, I was congratulated by Gordman and Meu2 when i posted about power strike 2, I had been collecting master system for a week and had about half a dozen posts on here, on any other site I would have been met with 'pics or gtfo' or accusations of being a troll.
I had been a reseller myself about 2003 onwards till I sold it all after my health scare in 2008, I played dumb and got valuations off a few places, some places offered me £5 if I posted it to them, I found places with fairer prices and stuck with them, one indie store even said ''might be worth ebaying this one'' I didnt ebay it and still have it. Attitudes often shock me in collecting, people act like animals and its not a nice sight, but I think its important to be the type of collector we want the hobby to have more of, because our actions can help and inspire others, I think its important to help people get into the hobby, I remember talking to a guy at playblackpool, he was showing his son master system games and had bought a system, I must have spent a good quarter of an hour going through games at a stall giving him recommendations, but people have helped me in a similar way so hopefully that guy will pass his knowledge on one day
