hi guys, been messing around with this idea for a while- the essential selection, the legendary, common games that every master system owner should have, they are fun, playable and cost under £5 each complete.
my first nominations are the ninja and enduro racer

R-type. Im not a shmup player but I really enjoy R-type. Something about the main orb is a neat idea. Shield/weapon/rear weapon ... just cool.
Rocky. Not the longest game by any means but its pretty fun to play. And the music will stick with you forever.

Heh no you are not wrong. My game collection is over 1000 games and I bet I have only tried about 20% of them.

Teddy Boy Hang-On Fantasy Zone (no clue if you can get it cheap) Transbot (but that's a love it or hate it kind of game) My Hero (ditto but more people seem to like this than transbot) Bank Panic (though I don't think you can find it for under £5)

Land of Illusion Ghostbusters (my copy was bought 10 years ago and only cost a few quid from Cash Converters, but I think it's become more expensive in recent times) Taz-Mania Ms Pac-Man Pac-Mania
I paid about £7 for a loose copy of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, but an SMS II with MW built in can be bought very cheaply (most SMS fans are put off by the RF output).
Also, a lot of SMS games are a lot cheaper on the Game Gear. The SMS and GG libraries aren't identical by any stretch of the imagination, but there is a fair amount of overlap and a screen magnifier will take care of the SMS mode games like Chase HQ and Prince of Persia where the playing screen is a lot smaller.

I'd add Astro Warrior and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Both great games in my opinion that can be found pretty cheaply.
