As always I've started a high score thread to coincide with my latest SMS Quest, but I've gone ahead and put ian's score in top spot already  ! I really enjoyed playing through this again and now I know how to earn that special bonus (check the game database entry) I'm gonna give it a few more tries and see if I can get somewhere close to the top spot  . Greta game, possibly the best game I've ever played Get your scores in, I know you've all got this one!!! Game On!!! |

Tried a quick game before seeing the video, died as I usually do on the Jungle Robotnik boss. Game Over and then....no score  So do you have to complete the game to get a score? That's not very nice  |

Ian's score is going to take a perfect run to beat though. My best effort is 1,238,700 and I collected every life, continue, emerald on one life. |

I would think you would need to try and collect as many rings in the bonus stages would help your score. |

Yeah the rings in the bonus stages count pretty heavily towards your score, especially the last few stages where the ring multiplier is quite high.

Given that there's an extra life on every level, and when you die all the rings respawn, and some levels have more than 100 rings on them... you should be able to grind the life counter to its maximum (99?) and then try to finish every level with as close to 99 rings as possible and/or get the biggest time bonus you can - I'm not sure where the balance lies on that last one.

I don't think you can max the life counter in this way as the life boxes don't re-spawn. You could certainly grind for a few extra lives on some levels, such as the first level, but once the life box is gone you life counter will remain consistent as you collect 100 rings and then die. Generally it is better to collect rings instead of going for the time bonus as the time bonus drops of very rapidly after 1 minute.

I could have sworn they respawn, at least on the boss levels... the Jungle Zone boss would be hell without all those lives. Or did I imagine that?

Seems like you're imagining that, lives definitely don't respawn. Losing 1 life can knock 300,000 off the special bonus, which is a hefty amount. I've tried the various combinations of rings/time bonus for each level and am pretty sure I've figured out the best way to score. My run wasn't perfect though, there's a few levels where I could have picked up more rings. |

Someone recently posted a comment on my Sonic high score vid informing that they'd beaten my score. Of course I had to set things right, up my game and reclaim my high score 1,443,900 |
