i apologise in advance if this thread has been done before
what are the most underrated sms games in your opinion? the ones that you love that never get rated highly as essential or desireable by anyone?
mine are: 1. dracula- normally film license games are shocking, this is one of the best platform games I have ever played in 20-odd years of playing computer games, it shows the sms off very well
2. rc grand prix- fantastic racing game, ok so gran turismo it is not but if I had been an sms owner back in the day I think I would have loved this
3. choplifter- this game is nearly 30 years old and is still a lot of fun, and quite tough, one of the best flight based games I am sure

I'm going to nominate a Game Gear game. Super Monaco GP.
This is a game that's given me years of enjoyment since I was eleven and, even now, I still haven't managed to get enough points to qualify for whatever lies beyond the standard 16 courses.
And this is a game that never seems to get any love anywhere. Even back in the day Sega Power only gave it a two star rating.

RPG wise - Miracle Warriors. While its hard to compare to Phantasy star, I found Miracle Warriors to be an awesome game. The uniqueness of that game has been unsurpassed in any other RPG to date in my opinion. Even my avatar name come from that game.
Sports - Rocky. A very short game but really fun to play and even 20 years later, I can still here the sounds from the in-between rounds in my head if I think of it.
Adventure - Golvellius. A Zelda-ish style of game that gets almost no love compared to the Alex Kidd titles yet I found it so much better.
Arcade - Rastan. In the world of Out run and Golden Axe, this game was basically invisible yet the replay value of it and just pure cool factor puts it head and shoulders above the other arcade options.
Shmup - Astro warrior. While I absolutely love R-Type, this game I also really enjoy. Much more fun to play instead of the bigger hit which is Space Harrier.

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars, because it's the sequel to the popular choice of the best game on the system, it gets IMO unwanted hate. Yes, compared to Miracle World it's an utter disappointment. But take the Alex Kidd name away and view it as a game on it's own and it's a basic but fun platformer. Nothing great but def. not as bad as people make it out to be. Submarine Attack: Could be my nostalgia, but it feels like a semi-overlooked game. Don't hear it mentioned often/at all or discussed. Didn't even make it past the first group stage on the 8-bit tournament we had. Titles like Lion King, Danan & Terminator got more votes in that group than it did and IMO Submarine Attack is a better game than these. Baku Baku (Animal): Don't know if this really counts as underrated, it's more overlooked thanks to it being a late Brazil only release. Gamewise, it's probably my favourite puzzle game on the system. Adventure - Golvellius. A Zelda-ish style of game that gets almost no love compared to the Alex Kidd titles yet I found it so much better. I don't know, I feel Golvellius gets a lot of love, making it hard to justify as underrated, even though you are right that it's not as popular as the Alex Kidd games. And to give your argument a point, Golvellius didn't make it past the first round of the tournament getting beat by Asterix, Ninja Gaiden & My Hero. So yeah, maybe it's a bit underrated in that it doesn't get enough love and admiration that it might deserve, but claiming it gets almost no love is kind of hard to agree on seeing as many people would claim it's an SMS essential.

I still think Robocod does not get enough love,i mean it is maybe not the most addictive of platformers but what a great looking game!.

Based on the tournament results I'd have to say Wonder Boy 3 is underrated On a more serious note I think Desert Strike and Road Rash should get some more recognition.

There are too many hidden gems that it´s impossible to ask around A journey through the games database is helpful with all the screenshots and informations. What also helps are these "100 games in 10 minutes" youtube videos I discovered some nice Mega Drive games with that strategy.

Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars, because it's the sequel to the popular choice of the best game on the system, it gets IMO unwanted hate. I agree with that. It can't hold a candle to Miracle World but it's not a bad game. It's crazy, weird, the death scream will drive you mad but it's nice little plattformer. Ghostbusters - Too much hate for a slightly repetitive but fun game that works great for the licence. Columns - Yes, it's not Tetris and that's a good thing. Somehow it became really hated (The Mega Drive Versions even more so) Jurassic Park - Fun Game but neither back then nor today seem a lot of people to like it. Back then it got rather bad ratings in magazines and today even retro-oriented websites like Defunt Gaming dislike it a lot. WWF Steel Ca... - I better don't go there

The only think I don't like about Columns on the SMS is that I find the blocks to small and it can strain your eyes after playing a while. Prefer the Mega Drive version.

We played that in Multiplayer back then on a normal sized CRT TV (which would be considered too small today in the 1080p 2 meter wide TV World ) and had a great time. It got way too fast after a couple of levels but till then we had a blast and the MS version is better than the MD version with the Flash version and more options all around

Blade Eagle 3D is overlooked by many, but for me is one of the best 3D games. (Not really much of a contest). Although the 3D effect of the ship is poor, the ability to fly below and above the screen works really well.

Ghost House. Hard-as-nails platformer, amazing atmosphere to it and great fun.
