Alex Kidd in Miracle world - system defining platformer Wonderboy - Another Key platformer Sonic the Hedgehog - I kinda see this as the megadrive's baby, but it was good on the master system, too and is sega's signature character. Out Run (3D) - Out Run is a classic arcade conversion, the 3D is decent and 3D as a whole was something never really tried on a system before... or until recently, since. R-Type - Key side scrolling shooter. Phantasy Star - Seminal RPG, first in the series. Smurfs 2 - Weird backstory/rarity value. Championship Hockey - A complete abomination unto all that is computer gamey. Ghost House - Idunno, It's a card game, which in and of itself is cool and I love it.
Can't think of another, sure I've forgotten loads.
Ah, Hang On should probably be there.

I would go with
Alex Kidd in Miracle World - A totally brilliant game and the first one that comes to most peoples minds when they think of the Master System.
Sonic the Hedgehog - A great game in its own right, and along with the following game below, showed that just because the Mega Drive had appeared, it didn't mean the Master System couldn't stand alongside it with great versions of the same game ideas.
Castle of Illusion - Another excellent platformer, that's in my opinion better than its 16bit counterpart.
Wonderboy III - Everyone raves about this game, its considered one of the greatest 8bit games.
Phantasy Star - Not my sort of thing, but a defining game for the console for sure.
The Ninja - A budget release that shows exactly what Sega were about, arcade style fast paced games with a ton of clever ideas. When Nes games were all £30+, Sega really did a great thing releasing a cheaper range of games, making the Master System an afforable option even compared to the tape based computers of the time.
Transbot - Another budget title that pretty much everyone with a Master System seems to have owned. Its pretty infamous for being a potentially great game spoiled by having a lot less levels than it should have had.
R-Type - An excellent conversion of the arcade classic, and a trump card for the console as no other home conversion could match it. Even the PC Engine version was sold on two separate cards that you had to buy individually, and even then still had one less level.
Hang On - Like Miracle World and Sonic this was built in to consoles so is many peoples first experience of gaming on a Master System. It may be a simple 32k game, but its plays really well and runs as smooth as silk - something not often seen in similar games on more powerful platforms. Its also a game with numerous releases, from the bundled loose card, the later cartridge release, the multi game combo cart releases where it was included with Safari Hunt. Then there is the rare Australian card complete boxed release, and the ultra rare pre-release 'red' Hang On card.
Now picking a tenth game is a bit tricky, I could go for Smurfs 2 for its well known rarity, Shinobi or Space Harrier for being superb home versions of well known Sega hits, but in the end I choose:
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World - The Kidd is the defining character for the console, so Sega bringing him back in such fine form was a great moment. After the lame Echanted Castle for the Mega Drive, it was surprising that Sega would give the Kidd his redemption in a final game for the Master System. Its a fantastic game to play, full of genius ideas and action packed. The only complaint people have about it is that its a bit short, which is the sort of complaint you want to have.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World - obvious, for 1986 this was awesome and combined so many things. It's a shame that it gets ridiculed or people cry about the 'difficulty' on youtube. Sonic the Hedgehog - The Genesis version was fast and looked awesome, the Master System hat great Gameplay. Clever level design, great music from Yuzo Koshiro...it was awesome Castle of Illusion - Another great plattformer and proof that license games don't have to suck Asterix - Same as above, a license, a plattformer, a great game and it's probably the proof of how big the Master System was in europe to get a good japanese team creating a good platform game with that license (Konami managed it too with their arcade game. It's funny that Infogrames (a FRENCH company) sucked so much with their Asterix games later on. Phantasy Star - I despise JRPGs (though Phantasy Star IV was fun) and yet it has to be mentioned, it is an awesome title. Golden Axe Warrior - Sega saw Zelda and did it better. Zelda is a great game but i think that GA Warrior tops it Shinobi - A great arcade conversion which was turned into a good home version. Most Arcade conversions suck as they play the same but with unlimited continues or other....sega introduced the live bar and some other tweaks and Shinobi was the start to a good series, it's just a shame that both "sequels" on the master system sucked. Zillion - Often being called the "Master System Metroid", it's a really good Action-Adventure Wonder Boy III - The Dragons Trap - There's a reason everybody mentions it (My favourite is still Wonder Land) Golvellius - It's Zelda 2 done right. By that time, Sega ripped off Nintendo whenever possible and sometimes they made things better, like with Golden Axe Warrior or Golvellius As i usually go to 11: WWF Steel Cage Challenge Not only to piss Ian off ( ) but in terms of "impact" and getting people to the system:Wrestling and of course the WWF were hugely popular in the early 90's and i remember Toys R' Us advertisements with this game in the center. Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart and the others were a big draw and therefore a lot of people surely bought this game.

Here's what I believe to be the ' 10 most important games'... In alphabetical order
Alex Kidd in Miracle World Classic Sega Platformer and Mascot
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse An Example of a 16bit version being bested by it's 8bit port
Choplifter Launch title capable of some real speed, all the parallax scrolling adds even more sense of speed, and everything is smooth as silk. Makes ThunderBlade feel like your playing on a laggy connection.
Double Dragon Classic arcade hit that somehow avoided the Big 'N's lawyers and made it out to both Sega and Nintendo. And the Sega version did what Nintendon't.
Gangster Town The game that proves you need to own, not one but two light phasers.
Hang-On & Safari Hunt Came bundled with darn near every system, at least every one I ever found. A Classic Arcade Game, and one more reason to own at least one light phaser. Hey it's fun to point and shoot. Hang-On was the first racer really for the SMS. While it's only 32k, I think it plays faster and smoother than any and every other racer made after for the Master System.
King's Quest - Quest for the Crown An example of PC Gaming style coming to the Master System, well done and by a 3rd party.
Shinobi Another Classic Arcade game, while slightly altered still a good port of the arcade and fun to play and starts you onto many great sequels.
Sonic The Hedgehog Another example of the Master System again being able to alter and port a 16bit game so amazingly.
Wonder Boy Final time I guess I have to say this, Classic Arcade game. Darn near perfect port. Great great times. And like Shinobi leads you to many great sequels!

I'll throw in a mixture here, opening with a popular game which I don't think is very good but can't deny the impact of.
Alex Kidd In Miracle World Bundled with most SMSII consoles and the game people think of when "Master System" is mentioned. Outstanding scope, particularly for 1986.
Digger Chan No, not brown-nosing. With homebrew releases prominent across several retro platforms it's great to see the SMS getting some action. Especially when it's a neat little puzzle game good enough for release in the console's prime.
Golden Axe Warrior Granted a Zelda clone in most respects but a defining action RPG which sadly attracted negative reaction from not being like Golden Axe. That it stands alongside Zelda is testament enough.
Mortal Kombat Somewhat a passing fad, but the SMS got in on the action with an excellent conversion which I found to be better to play than the SNES version.
Operation Wolf Arcade conversions were a big selling point for Sega and this was a huge arcade hit. Having a light gun meant that (although the cabinet wasn't strictly a gun game) you got that arcade feel at home. Stripped back a bit but not compromising quality.
Phantasy Star Another defining RPG. There isn't really much more to say about it than that.
Power Strike The best home exclusive shmup? A rank system ensures you'll never play exactly the same game twice. Plus outstanding graphics (no slowdown, barely any flicker) and music.
Power Strike II Not actually a "proper" sequel to the above but, usual 8 bit small sprites aside, pushes the console to within touching distance of earlier 16-bit shooters.
Sonic The Hedgehog The SMS version of Sega's big mascot, no doubt just trailing Alex Kidd in the memory stakes. A more traditional platformer than the 16 bit version and more playable as a result.
Street Fighter II THE game for a good while and the SMS never saw any of it in its prime. However that it did show up eventually, courtesy of Tec Toy and a not especially good version, is worth a mention for the sheer "Sonic on a Nintendo console" level of IT'LL NEVER HAPPEN beating.

Creating a list like this is a pretty hard thing to do. You have to ignore bias, personal-preference and nostalgia. There have never been any sales figures released for SMS games so that doesn't help either. Here's what I think:
Alex Kidd in Miracle World Obvious choice. It is #1 in our Top 100 games, won the games tournament and is pretty much universally agreed to be the defining game on the system.
Sonic the Hedgehog Another obvious choice. Although the Mega Drive version gets the glory, Sonic on the SMS is a fantastic game in its own right. There's a lot more I can say about this (as it's my most favourite game ever) but I don't think I need to.
Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap The Wonder Boy series on the SMS is excellent, and The Dragon's Trap is the pinnacle. This game really showcases what the SMS is capable of and is well-remembered by anyone who has ever played it.
Phantasy Star The original instalment in the renowned series of the same name. It pioneered the RPG genre, had a battery-backed RAM for saving games, made excellent use of pseudo-3D and was pretty unique in having a female protagonist. And all on the SMS!
Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion There are several excellent Disney platformers on the system but I find Castle of Illusion is the one that is most remembered and loved by those who owned the SMS back in the day. It's also better than the Mega Drive version!
Fantasy Zone Being one of the system's earlier titles and an all-round great game, Fantasy Zone is pretty synonymous with the SMS. It's vibrant colour-palette also does a great job of showcasing the hardware.
Gangster Town The SMS had a plethora of peripherals, but the most popular and best-supported had to be the light phaser. Although Gangster Town might not invoke as many nostalgic memories as Safari Hunt (a game built-in to some of the earlier consoles), it is definitely the best light phaser game on the system. It even has co-op (use of 2 phasers), a very awesome and unique thing indeed for 1987!
Shinobi It was a close call between this and The Ninja as they're both awesome ninja-type games that are closely associated with the SMS. Shinobi though, is more awesome in an obvious way and I know of many original SMS-owners who have great memories of the game.
Hang-On Despite being a very early title, it's the best and smoothest racer on the system. It was built in to many of the first consoles and owners became very familiar with it when a cartridge failed to load correctly and Hang-On would play instead!
Double Dragon Although the NES version of this games gets the glory (for some reason I'll never be able to comprehend), Double Dragon on the SMS is a great game which can be enjoyed with another person thanks to it co-op capability. It's probably the best fighting/beat'em-up on the system too.
As an honourable mention, I have to name Pro Wrestling ;D It has catchy music, a nice variety of moves, good controls and strategic gameplay which required timing and skill. It's easily the best wrestling game on the system, despite being made 6 years before its competition! (WWF Steel Cage Challenge)

Not easy to pick only 10 games out, but I try it.
1) Alex Kidd in Miracle World This game is a must have for every Master System owner. Like ShadowAngel said, for a 1986 game, it´s a really good platformer. I like the idea of the boss fights with the janken matches. Awesome music, colorful graphics and awesome gameplay. One of my most favourite games ever.
2) Sonic the Hedgehog Everytime when I talk with my friends about the Master System, they said Sonic the Hedgehog is a game they loved and still love. This game is better than every other Sonic game (better than the Mega Drive version). The graphics are simply awesome for an 8 bit console. Sonic is a strong character and Dr. Robotnik a real bad guy. And again: Awesome graphics, sounds and music, gameplay. Another must have for the Master System and one of the best video games of all time.
3) Streets of Rage If you´re looking for a good beat´em up, Streets of Rage is a good choice. The story takes place in a bad and corrupt world with nice level and character designs and a suitable soundtrack.
4) Out Run Out Run is an arcade classic game. You drive through various country´s and you need to hurry up before the time limit gets critical. The soundtrack is legendary and the gameplay something special in comparison to typical racing games where you drive around circuits.
5) Wonder Boy in Monster Land The Wonder Boy series are cult. Wonder Boy in Monster Land, the second game of the series, plays in a world with knights and monsters and Wonder Boy is a young knight too, fighting his way through a lot of fantastic, round based, levels. Definitely worth to play like Wonder Boy III and Wonder Boy in Monster World on the Mega Drive.
6) Master of Darkness This game is better than Bram Stoker´s Dracula from Sony Imagesoft. Great and fine gameplay in a perfect staged, dark England. I love the atmosphere.
7) Aztec Adventure Find the gate to the paradise - This is the goal of the game. Travel through a colorful world where money is important everywere and enemies can be bought and fight by your side. Awesome.
8) Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Disney games with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are wonderful on the Master System. Land of Illusion with Mickey is one of the best games. Mickey falls asleep while reading a book and wakes up in a fantasy world. This game deserves a chance from every SMS gamer.
9) The Ninja Yeah, most people mentioned Shinobi, but The Ninja is the other great ninja game on the Master System. As I said in my first sentence, there are more than 10 great SMS games. The Ninja is awesome. Every level has a different design but the ninja feeling never get lost, quite the contrary. I love the sounds and enemies.
10) Quest for the Shaven Yak Starring Ren & Stimpy I don´t own this game. But if you really look for one of the best brazilian Tec Toy games, invest in Ren & Stimpy. Not many people own this game but a video on Youtube can help to give you good impressions. The graphics are unique on the System in my opinion and the characters are nice animated. Nice platformer.
There are more good games: Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Zillion, Laser Ghost, Shinobi, Golden Axe Warrior, Digger Chan.. They all deserve a chance.

1-Shinobi Above all and compared to nintendo nes, Master system was the console for those who like playing arcade games and shinobi was one of the best.
2-Alex kidd in miracle world Very nice platform game and maybe the most famous sms related character (sonic is more a sega mascot than sms mascot)
3-Phantasy Star A huge RPG game and the main character was a girl ! This game was ahead for its time. Released in Japan 7 days before (or after?) the first final fantasy. Symbolic of master system's story in japan.
4-Wonderboy The second sms mascot. Every wonderboy game is wonderful and every game has its own feeling.
5-Wonderboy 3 the dragon's trap Maybe my favorite game.
6-Fantasy zone When I was young, I enjoyed playing fantasy zone but I didn t tell it because I felt this game too "girly"... Now I can say it without shame and it was good to play such a game !
7-Castle of illusion It was the time when disney games were wonderful games (lucky dime caper, land of illusion).
8-Golden axe warriors Yes it looks like zelda but it has also its own feeling.
9-Smurfs 2 travel the world The game to have for evey collector. It looks more legen-wait for it-dary than rare these last few months...
10-Sonic Sonic is for me the game which is the begining of the second life of master system when it was sold together with the megadrive and when the old master system became master system 2 with AK built in.

1-ShinobiAbove all and compared to nintendo nes, Master system was the console for those who like playing arcade games and shinobi was one of the best. I don't think that's really an argument, as the NES had a lot of arcade conversions too and not all were als ugly as Shinobi. Take: Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Ninja Gaiden, Ms. Pac-Man, Baseball Stars, Blades of Steel, Qix, 1943, Galaga, Lifeforce....overall, the NES was better for Arcade games as there all those developers releasing their arcade games, while the Master System only had Sega als Arcade developer, sure Shinobi is great, Hang-On is great and Space Harrier or Teddy Boy are fine too, but otherwise? Both share some good arcade versions like Marble Madness or Bubble Bobble but overall: Sega never had a chance to compete with the NES as they had all the great arcade games from Nintendo, Capcom, Konami, Namco and others and some of Segas Arcade games were too advanced/needed the technology from the arcade machines to be fun on the Master System (Afterburner, G-Loc, Galaxy Force for example)
