The thought crossed my mind, has anyone ever attempted to hack Sagaia into the original Darius? Seems like it would have to be a pretty extensive hack, but mostly in the graphics & sound department. The core gameplay is already there. What do you think?

What would be the point?
Changing sprites: pretty easy, so long as they're roughly the same shape Changing music/sound: very hard Changing enemy behaviour: crazy hard Changing level layout: pretty hard
If what you want to do is change it into Darius II, that'd be a bit easier, as it's just the title screen.

Well, I see a point in it, if you put the time into doing it right. Look no further than some of the great NES hacks out there, like Zelda: Outlands. Not sure you could make this like Darius, but you could certainly make what otherwise appears to be a totally new game.

You could get most of the way there because most of the art is going to be similar (the midbosses in Sagaia are smaller versions of the level bosses from Darius). The powerup system is different and you respawn at checkpoints, so you'd struggle to make it like a port would've been.
