Do you think you could do a SMS-makeover for Metroid? That would be all kinds of awesome.

I prefer the nes version but only due to nostalgia I think, I'd still love to see a SMS version and great effort with the box art guys

There's a few candidates for a makeover that I have in mind already, but you never know I might get around to it eventually I have just done another one, this time its the under appreciated SG-1000 game Girl's Garden to get the treatment: youtu.be/Ayr7K2xgY_c

Another one done: youtu.be/KmozQtsYj0kThis time its the Game Boy classic Super Mario Land 2, a game that I think really benefits from a Master System makeover! I was going to recreate every level from the game (I've redone the entire level maps rather than just individual screenshots this time), but its taken far longer than I expected. So what you'll see is screens from around half the levels in the game, which gives a good view of the game anyway and makes a long enough video. I think its a shame that Nintendo themselves have never bothered updating either of the Mario Land games, especially when they have re-released the console games numerous times, even for their handheld systems. They are two of the best Mario games ever made in my opinion, and to my mind play more like an Alex Kidd or Mickey Mouse/Illusion games than typical Mario ones, with their huge amount of variety and fast pace. I left out the original Game Boy screens from the video, to keep it from getting too long, but here are some side by side comparison screenshots to give an idea of the difference:

One technique people have used to make such "updates" - often as hoaxes - is to decompose to the underlying 16x16 (or whatever) images, edit those and reassemble. That way you can make a whole level map and animate through it in your video. I have some tools around for doing that, as it can be part of map-making in general to do that sort of decomposition. For SML2, the graphics have a Super Game Boy feel as you have mostly stuck to the original three colours per tile, recoloured. A "true" SMS port would have looked look even better

I did patch together the whole maps for about half the levels of the game, and while it would have been nice to scroll them and simulate the game actually being played, that would have taken even more time for what essentially just a bit of fun experimenting. Don't most Game Boy games when played on the Super Game Boy adaptor just remap the 4 shades of grey to 4 other colours. Which doesn't look so great: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kOIS9QXyPcI didn't want to change the graphics much, adding loads of detail would detract from their original clean cartoon styling. Unlike the first Mario Land this game just looks like it should be in colour, so for the most part just choosing suitable colours makes a big difference. Its not like I skimped on the colours either all levels use 16 of them, 75% more than originally!

Then it got a very nice colorization, a custom border, and at least in Donkey Kong's case better audio too, not sure if any other SGB carts made use of the Audio enhancement.

It's this latter colourisation I was thinking of.

It does have some great tunes, especially the main space level theme. I love the ominous bit of music that plays when the end of level bosses are introduced too, it really adds to the atmosphere.
