Tournament is back again after a few days break.
Two big names, but as I never really got into or for that matter really played Phantasy Star for any longer period of time, I have to go with Castle of Illusion here.

Phantasy Star is the definitive game of the Sega Master System, so losing here would be unfortunate. Even if you don't like RPGs, you should vote for it just because it is a great technical achievement of a game and a massive adventure for an 8-bit system.

Well, people vote for different reasons, I vote mainly by emotions and go after what I know I like better. And at previous rounds (and it still applies) the question that was asked was your favourite game/s. Sure, I know Phantasy Star is great and was amazing for it's time. But it's a game that I know I can't enjoy without a FAQ or PAR cheats. So out of the two, it's not my favourite game. And while it might be a definitive game for the SMS in terms of technical achievements and depth, for me the SMS is a great under-appreciated plattform system and CoI is one reason why.

Castle of Illusion for me. It's a great Jump n' Run, i enjoy it every time i play it, even though it's a bit too easy.
As for Phantasy Star: Well i don't like JRPGs, everyone here knows it. I played the game and couldn't get into it. Compared to Phantasy Star IV (which i oddly enough enjoyed a lot and finished) it aged horribly.

The game was so good it even put the sequel on the MD to shame. Technically it's probably the most impressive 8-bit game released on any console, and it's a shame that it's likely to lose out to a game that's mostly clouded by childhood reverie. Castle of Illusion was a huge part of my childhood and it's a good game, but it's like a debate as to whether Jackass 3 is better than Citizen Kane. I know the games are different, but there's already a Castle of Illusion on the MD. Phantasy Star is one of a kind and one of the most iconic and important games in SMS history.

Phantasy Star is a Milestone. The Best 8 Bits RPG, the one that created a standart that is followed today... Almost 25 years later. Superb graphics, excellent music, great playability...How can a game like this lose to COI...How??? Castle is a really excellent game...don´t get me wrong, but is no match to COI. I finished both games several times...and Castle can´t light a candle near Phantasy Star. It´s democracy in action... but it´s a damn shame that a game like this is eliminated soo soon... like Sonic 2 was.

Could never get into phantasy star, where as Castle of Illusion is a joy toplay through. There are so many great little ideas in the game, it isnt just a simple linear platformer. Also great music

I had to vote Phantasy Star, unfortunately it's still losing.
Phantasy Star, while not being a TRUE RPG in the sense of the term RPG, it was so big, the 3D dungeons, the amazing story, the fact is wasn't bested/tied with any other game in it's series until the 4th game, the exploration, the map drawing, I could go on. It's just so great.
Castle of Illusion? Yes it's fun and very pretty, but if you want to run from left to right jumping on enemies and over holes, games like that are a dime a dozen back in this era, there were not many Phantasy Star type games, and even fewer that were as fun.
I will say, one strike against PS, I hate just random battle after random battle, which aren't really random, you're wandering around HOPING they pop up so you level grind to get stronger and/or money grind to buy new equipment to make you stronger, that gameplay mechanic is for the birds, however I will also say, if you're playing blind, no walkthru no pre-drawn maps, just fly by the seat of your pants there will be enough random encounters to supply you with what you need... aside from the FIRST bit of level grinding so you can actually walk a screen or two away from your hometown, which as I already said, is for the birds.

Castle of Illusion? Yes it's fun and very pretty, but if you want to run from left to right jumping on enemies and over holes, games like that are a dime a dozen back in this era And most of them were bad. It's not like you can just draw a line, place some enemies and say "go, run and jump". What sets Castle of Illusion apart from a lot of those "dime a dozen" jump n' Runs is the level design. I like some ideas like the Coffee Cup in the library level or the last level where you have to carry the light to see something. Also there's so much to discover, like all the hidden boxes. I would say there are propably 10-11 other 8-Bit Jump n' Runs in the same league as Castle of Illusion. It's a real highlight. One could also argue that Phantasy Star wasn't that much different from all the Dragon Quests, Final Fantasys and even on the Master System there was also Y's

I think Phantasy Star is considered the defining game of the Master System, in America. Elsewhere the console really shined with its platform games. Whereas a US gamer will say Phantasy Star is the best or most recognizable SMS game, in Europe your much more likely to hear someone say Alex Kidd or Sonic. Castle of Illusion is very much up there with the best of platform games for the Master System, or any console for that matter. The graphics are beautiful, every level has a unique theme, there are loads of secrets, great music, tons of cool ideas not seen in other games at the time. Castle of Illusion is near perfect, there aren't even any annoying levels in it - which Sonic games for instance usually suffer from.

I think that's a really good point and it kind of relates to the UPC stickers in a way. I think collectors just have different outlooks depending on where they live/grew up. I know for me personally it's harder to relate to a lot of PAL games just because they're not what I was exposed to. I always had plans to collect more PAL games but it seems so much more expensive than it was a few years back. Don't forget about Japan. No kidding, those guys are Phantasy Star Phreaks. Come on Japanese guys! Where are you??
