I know Monster Land is a classic that I have a certain nostalgic association to seeing as I had it for the C64. But Land of Illusion is just to damn great. LoI gets my vote.

I said it in the other poll, i really, really like Wonder Boy in Monster Land, it's such a nice little game, fun levels, lots of hidden things to discover and it was the first game to send me in a rage because of the stupid Dungeon at the end. But i still like it.
Land of Illusion is also a great game, though i prefer Castle of Illusion.
So my vote goes to Wonder Boy in Monster Land.

Wow, another super hard decision to make. I love both of these games and in a way, I think they're pretty similar in gameplay. I'm going to give Land of Illusion the edge though as I think it is an overall more polished game.

Very hard decision this time. I really like all the Wonder Boy games, but Land of Illusion is a great game too…
Land of Illusion +1

Land of Illusion is an amazing achievment for the SMS in every department: Amazing graphics, excellent music, perfect playability...i really love it.
I Got the game when it came out in 92 and i finished it dozens of times. When i started collecting games back in 2003 i got WB in Monsterland... i played it and consider it to be a classic... but no match to LOI.
I understand people that vote in WB, and believe some of them have the same warm memorie that i have of LOI, but i really hope LOI Wins this round.

I used to play Castle of Illusion a decent amount back in the day, but I've never been a huge fan of the Illusion games on the whole. Land was worse than Illusion. Wonder Boy in Monster Land has a lot more meat to it and while it's no Wonder Boy III it's still one of the defining games for the system I think. A brave sequel that didn't just stand pat with what the first game established and instead took it in a new and arguably even better direction. How many other second games are there out there that you can say that about?

How many other second games are there out there that you can say that about? For some reasons, it was quite common during the 8-Bit Era to create a sequel that's completely different from the prequel. Next to Wonder Boy, these are some examples: Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Alex Kidd: the Lost Stars (and the other 2 games, Alex Kidd never stayed the same) Back to the Future 2 - Back to the Future 3 Zillion - Zillion 2 or on the NES: Castlevania - Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest Super Mario Bros. - Super Mario Bros. 2 (The non-japanese version) Mario Bros - Super Mario Bros. has to be named also Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - TMNT 2: The Arcade Game Legend of Zelda - Zelda 2 Donkey Kong - Donkey Kong Jr. (and Donkey Kong 3 - completely different games)

Of those listed, I'd say maybe only TMNT 2, and that one doesn't really count since it is an arcade port of a game independent entirely from the first. Mario, Alex Kidd, Zelda...they tried to be different, but they certainly weren't better. Wonder Boy in Monster Land, many would say, was.

Back in the eighties most games didn't get sequels at all, there were so many other ideas to be explored. So I guess developers thought they had to make a follow up significantly different for people to think it was worth buying. Its very much different now, where they just give you more of the same until your sick of it.

I didnt get to play either back in the day so theres no nostalgia vote for me on this one. I have never got into Wonder Boy in Monster Land, i found the start at bit boring then didnt really give it much of a chance. Where as Land of illusion is really great fun, if a bit easy.

Land of Illusion just wins. The lack of a password in Monster Land and the fact that it is outshined by its successor means Monster Land just loses out.

And then we were tied.
Still a couple of votes left though.

Id go for Land of Illusion, monster land is probably my least favourite of the 4 wonder boy games, it is a good game regardless though.
