I have noticed that there are several games that were released on both msx and sg1000 / master system. For example: cgi.ebay.co.uk/MSX-F-16-FIGHTING-FALCON-ROM-JAPAN_W0QQitemZ8253607352QQThe hardware specs of both machines are virtually identical. So is the sms actually compatible with msx? or is it a case of them being so similar that its easy to port games across?.

"MSX is an old Z80-based family of home computers which appeared in autumn 1983 as an attempt to establish a single standard in home computing similar to VHS in video. They were popular in Asian (Korea, Japan) and South American (Brazil, Chile) countries as well as in Europe (Netherlands, France, Spain) and former Soviet Union, but they are virtually unknown in USA. Although the MSX standard quietly died from year 1988, the world got to see MSX2, MSX2+ and TurboR extensions of it." www.faq.msxnet.org/www.generation-msx.nl/

The SMS support SG-1000 legacy video mode, making port easy to do (not trivial, but easy. You have to remap memory addresses, port accesses, etc). The PSG chipsets are very similar but not exactly the same. Same thing.
Korean pirates have ported plenty of MSX stuff to SMS. For exemple I have a 188-in-1 SMS cartridge.

i think theres still a homebrew programming scene for the msx. Is there anyone capable of porting some games across?. It would be great if someone could make new cartridge games for the sms after all these years, i know i would buy them.

Are castlevania or Metal gear on any of those compilations? as those are two msx games that would be cool to play on a master system.

No, they are MSX-1 games. AFAIK both Dracula and Metal Gear are MSX-2 games? The SMS is not compatible with MSX-2 video chip.

yeah they are both msx2 games. Does the msx2 video chip display more colours?. Or is it just a case of being so different that it would require a lot more programming to port games across?

It's very different than the legacy TMS9918 modes used in SG-1000/MSX-1. I don't know the details. I know MSX-2 has a bigger palette than SMS but overally they should be similar in functionnality. Porting games accross could be fairly difficult, at least not something hobbyists would like to do on a regular basis.

do we know why the Sg1000 and msx are so similar? Did sega purposly base their console on the msx standard to get more developers onboard, or was it merely a coincidence?

Dunno. Maybe the TMS9918 video chip was a standard good choice at the time.
