I've only been looking for this in the last day or so, but only seem to have found copies of this game with a portrait style manual which I therefore assumed was the US version. What's the deal with the PAL version(s) or did they do something different here?

No one knows about this? I'm shocked!

Most of european RPG games have a portrait style manual (as phantasy star, golden axe warrior...).
There are also few others games for which the european version has portrait style manual, championship hockey or T2 for example

Ah ok - thank you. What about languages? The ones I've seen (on SMS power for example), only has English on the back of the box which is odd for a Euro release.

both the back cover and the manual are english only The reason being that with so much text in the game those RPGs were really only playable in English, and there wasn't the ROM capacity (or at least it wasn't cost effective) to add additional languages, why bother selling the game to an audience that couldn't play it?

There was a lot of people in France in the 80's (and probably in all the countries where they don t speak english) who played RPGs even if they were not able to read english. It's a good way to learn! I remember that without learning english, I was able to understand the words "sword", "shield", "evil", "maze" when I was 8-10 years old
