It didn't get an SMS release in the PAL regions, so I doubt they even bothered considering the US market.

No way, by that point the Master System was well below the NES. It just wouldn't have been a good business decision at all. Still, there may be something about it somewhere if one considers that Camerica held the rights originally. Since they ported a few of their best games to the SMS, I wouldn't be surprised if they at least considered it.

Did Nintendo's strict third party thing get in the way of companies releasing accessories for the Master System? or did that only apply towards games?

Most accessories were unlicensed, certainly the Game Genie was.

No, interestingly, Sega got in the way of third-party accessories. They had a lawsuit filed against them by Beeshu back in the day, and that was pretty much the end of third-party accessories in the states. Apparently, from what I read in the court documents, Sega had somehow made their coding special so only they knew how to make their controllers 100% compatible, so that third-party controllers, IE stuff by Beeshu, wouldn't be gauranteed to work.
