What the hell is the Arcade Command Stick? I'm assuming it's something that Tonka never followed through with. I seem to remember it being mentioned in a Tonka catalog once, but I could be wrong. Are there any known pictures or prototypes of the Arcade Command Stick?

Where is that picture from? I've never heard of it, but it sounds interesting.

It's from the back of a Tonka master system box. Here's a full pic of the back: The Arcade Command Stick mention is in the next to the last paragraph. Just to the right of the picture of the goober and his dad shooting duckies and bunnies.

I can ask John to see if he remembers anything about it. This may be what eventually was the rapid-fire joystick.

Yeah, asking John is a good idea. It's definitely not the Rapid Fire Control Stick because that is mentioned on the back of the box as well.
Does anybody have easy access to the Tonka ('88 I think) catalog? I think it shows up in there as well.

You know what? This may have something to do with the Sega of America Vs. Beeshu lawsuit that they went through. Something tells me Sega may have jumped the gun on Beeshu and were going to release a joystick similiar to the Ultimate Superstick. That would make a lot of sense, because about one year after that catalog you mention the lawsuit started.

Got it, just received an email back today. Here's the skinny. After the Control Stick they released, Sega was thinking of releasing a table-top, arcade-style controller to reinforce the idea that the processor in the Master System was arcade quality, to give that whole 'arcade in your home' idea more meaning. It was thus envisioned as a more solid controller with buttons like you'd find in the arcade. However, problem was this idea was first put forward when Tonka was about to lose control of the Master System to Sega, and thus the former company never did anything with the idea. Sega unearthed it when the Genesis was popular, like the Street Fighter II controller, but the idea never really kicked off anyway.

Thanks for the detective work Stan. So I guess that means there are no pictures or protos... just some overly ambitious text on the back of a box. I picture it as a cross between the ascii and the phantom.

Yeah, he said nothing ever came of it, I don't think anyone even envisioned a design for the thing, just an idea that floated away.

I realize this is a rather old thread, but I came looking for information about the Arcade Command Stick because I saw it listed as one of the compatible controllers on the back of the Shinobi box. Naturally, I was like, Wha...? I don't remember no Arcade Command Stick! I read this thread, and that was that. But it turns out Estimated Prophet was right -- it was listed in a Tonka catalog, and it's tucked away right here on the Sega8bit site. It's even got a picture, which is either a prototype or a really good airbrushed image. It looks like perhaps you could rotate the buttons to your most comfortable angle. Of course, if comfort was a consideration, why a cube for the joystick handle?

Sweet! And the Mega Phaser looks pretty cool as well. I bet I'd have been queuing for that if one came in retail near me.

That "Arcade command Stick" looks like a cheap third-party peripheral... That 'child' looks like a small 30 something man with make up on, really strange.. Haha. I was thinking the same thing.
