It's funny to me that Alf seems to be so popular in Europe and close areas. I noticed when I lived in Russia that Alf was all over the place. I can't tell you how many Alf toys I saw in cabs. I mean, we all love him here too, but what's the obsession over there? I have several German versions of MAD where he takes prominent status too.

Are you from the USA? I´m not sure whyt makes a character so popular in certain regions. Somehow Alf just hit the right spot around here; I remember the boss of a big TV station here saying just how much he loves Alf. Whenever there is a slot to fill, he could put on Alf and be sure of good ratings even in the 100st rerun...and that was in the early 2000s. Maybe it is the humor that works well in other languages, or the localization is especially good (Alf´s German voice is one everyone recognizes within a second). Maybe it is just that grown-ups and kids alike would like to be as impudent as Alf and still get away with it.
On the other hand some other US-hits, like Seinfeld or Everybody Loves Raymond bombed in Germany and were soon shifted to minor TV channels into the night program.

I voted Mickey Mouse, for obvious reasons.

Everybody Loves Raymond bombed in Germany I wouldn't say that it bombed, if it was a flop, then RTL 2 wouldn't have shown it 3 times completely in the early evening and after that, kabel eins showed it also 3 times, before that Pro7 showed it. It was a rather succesful show. If you want to talk about a succesful and great american sitcom, name Becker. In Germany it never got a chance, it was shown in the middle of the night and Sat1 didn't even show all seasons. I think the success of an foreign comedy/sitcom show depends on the humour. German comedy is awful with a few positive exceptions and i get the impressions that most people prefer either light-hearted humour (Alf is a good example) or the crude humour found in Married with Children or American Pie and the other important thing is the overdub (it's a real shame, that most germans never see shows in the original language, overdubs just sucks - except for bad movies that get better trough a funny overdub). For example when they showed Cheers (great show) for the first time in germany, they basically changed everything, the names of the characters, the dialogue - everything and it was bad, really bad so nobody watched it. Later another TV station made a better dub, but it was never a big success. Back to the main topic Alex Kidd and Sonic would be too obvious and they had both their bad games on the system. I take Wonder Boy. The first game was a nice plattformer, Monster Land is my favourite and Dragon's Trap is very good too.
