If you got the code for generally any early game, Atari 2600 or otherwise, you could take the time to put it together in Z80 Assembly. It wouldn't be easy, but definitely easier than working from scratch.

It wouldn't be easy, but definitely easier than working from scratch. According to Wikipedia, the Atari 2600 use a MOS 6507 CPU. Sure, the code would be good for reference, but little else... I'd argue that it'd be much easier to rewrite the game from scratch than attempt to directly port the code.

Well, yeah, I know it's entirely different, but I'd think if you had something to look at to see how it works, you could easily translate it with some hard work.

I think I may have misunderstood your original post - I thought you meant convert it to Z80 assembly line by line. Sorry for the confusion.

Oh, hell no, I know that isn't possible. I meant only that you can see how it functioned for, say the Atari 2600 or whatever, and then slowly build an SMS version BASED on it, not directly from it.

That was my favorite game on Intellivision, especially with the auto-fire on. Very addicting. I used to overheat the machine playing it so long. The atari version is almost as good. You can use sega controllers on it as well. Can't remember if they had to be modded first... Also, the pack-in copies with some systems had a hidden game inside called Meteor. Meteor was the original game until Mattel changed it to avoid lawsuits from Atari. You had to turn it on then keep pressing reset until the screen said Meteor instead of Astrosmash. Took about 100 presses or so.
