I thought the hate directed at the sequels was just because they're essentially the same game but with redrawn sprites.

I think that golden axe 1 & 2 have more fun parts in it and a bit more variation in enemy's and level design

Golden Axe on the Master System is really, really impressive, it's a great game and the frame rate isn't really that bad after you get used to it either, I personally think they did an amazing job with it.

I have no idea why the hate was thrown at the frame rate. It's 8-bit fer crying out loud. Streets of Rage isn't much smoother and came years after.

To be honest, it's actually pretty amazing how much they milked out of the Master System for Golden Axe. Sure, the frame rate is a little off at first, but it's hardly a problem. Most of the game elements were retained, and that's the main thing.
