It'd been awhile since I fired up my SMS, so I decided to embark on Golden Axe after having played it on both the PS2 Classics port and the Genesis original. Graphically, it's pretty impressive what they were able to pull off on the Master System - initially it sure looks good, but it doesn't play as well with the meager frame rate. You really have to time your hits and attacks well, because if you hit at the wrong time then by the time he finishes swinging and the frame rate catches up, the bad guys will have you for dinner. I found it very tough to hit the little elf dudes because of this.
My biggest surprise, though, was just how short this was compared to the original. It's not that I'm complaining about it only having five worlds - that's understandable given the limitations of the system. Altered Beast had to scrap levels too. What surprises me is just how SHORT each level is. It's literally like three or four screens, and that's it. Surely they could have fit more on the cart than that.
Bosses are also pretty disappointing too - usually just small, regular joe sprites that often don't even stand out from the rest of the players. Even when Death Adder comes out, I had to double take it was him since I was still fighting a skeleton when he nonchalantly strolled down from the top of the screen.
Because of the framerate complications, the game is a bit of a challenge, especially when you get ping ponged in the later levels. After playing through it once or twice though, it's pretty easy to finish the game, and fast too!
How do you guys like this one on the SMS?

Never liked it.
It's choppiness gave me horrible headaches and eye strains. It looks great when it's still, but the jerkiness is horrible.

Ahh I remember playing a PC port, I had a 8088 (XT) based computer, when I had it on VGA mode it was very very choppy, and when you called in a special it used to take literally 10-15mins for it to complete the sweep.
Thats why I too am impressed by the SMS port, but the arcade still holds a special place in my heart.

Well, I liked me too much the sms conversion, even maybe could be better. They trade non flicker by choppy...could be that the sms version is so short because they dont compress a lot of graphics for increase speed? I dont know...Maybe someone in this forum could be confirm that. For me, as rainmun, the arcade also still holds a special place in my heart

It isn't bad really some of the graphics and music are ropey though. I think movement is a bit slow and choppy, but it seems to slowdown even more in 60hz with me, so I play it in 50...
Not a bad effort and looking at some of their other arcade games converted to the sms, this is definitely not the worst!

I thought all sms games were awesome when I was 13! I also liked Vanilla Ice, so there goes any credibility a 13 year old thinks!

A bit easy but still class. Can't believe so many people don't rate it. Graphics blew me away when I first played it.

The length of the levels in terms of the scroll is exactly the same as the Mega Drive version. I guess it seems shorter because there are less baddies to duff up along the way - I think the screen stops less.
I'm a fan. I always found it more responsive than the 16-bit and preferred the zippy character speed, because it's annoying to get beaten up in the Mega Drive version because you can't move away quickly enough from tapping a bloke on the head with your sword hilt.

I quite like Golden Axe on the SMS... but then I think that has something to do with the fact that back in the day I got this and Altered Beast on the same day. Golden Axe seemed a heck of a lot better after I'd already played Altered Beast. ;D

Golden Axe seemed a heck of a lot better after I'd already played Altered Beast. ;D Hey, no way, Altered Beast rules. Both are cut from the same cloth when it comes to cutting down the levels and modes they ported the games, but I just like how Altered Beast plays more. A faster framerate, more responsive sprites (I always liked how the enemies exploded into blocks in this version, way more dramatic than the disappearing of the Mega Drive version) and more music. Rise from your grave!

I was pretty fond of the Master System version way back when it first came out. As for difficulty, it was okay... short yes, but many games were back then.
I actually liked the music, especially the final level. Ending was fine too.
My opinion may change if I try it again.
Still better than Golden Axe III, though.

Golden Axe III gets a lot of hate...was it really that much worse (or different) than the other two? Seems like a pretty tough formula to screw up.
