After loving Rygar I decided to play the similar looking Danan: The Jungle Fighter...oh boy. Well, it initially seems quite promising. An intricate backstory at the start screen. A pause menu with inventory and beasts that can be summoned. Well, that's about it.
The graphics are bad, with little separation between Danan and the high contrast backdrops. His weapon and upgrades are really lame - he's this massive fighter, yet all he can wield is a small dagger? You upgrade that weapon two times throughout the game, and even still, it's a lame little dagger you're waving around...and the upgrades don't seem to do anything! That goes for your amulet and orb upgrades too. They had the right idea with the inventory, but at least make the items you acquire change your status somewhat. Even those animals that you can summon are basically worthless, since you can't use them during bosses - the only time the game would actually be difficult enough to need their assistance.
Calling any part of the game difficult is a stretch, though. You can literally breeze through the game first time without even dying or trying. That seems like quite the feat considering all the doors that lead you to random levels you have to enter throughout. It doesn't really matter though - my strategy was just to go in every door I saw, and eventually I made it to the end without a single moment of contemplation. The bosses are all pretty easy too - basically you can just sort of hide in corners and wait until they swoop down to attack. Or for the final hyped "Gilbas" boss, you just crouch and hack the 2 button without moving and boom the game is done. We don't even get to see the boss disintegrate or anything. The screen just suddenly switches to a high score once you've hit him enough.
To call the game rough around the edges is a huge stretch. They had the right idea with the inventory, massive amounts of item boxes, fairly animated bosses and a really fleshed out story. In the execution, though, the plot seems like it is written as it goes along, the inventory again does nothing and all the items mean there should never be a moment where your time or life should be in a critical state.
I had really high hopes for this one, but it's clear SEGA rushed this sucker out without any damage control. This is the only game I can think of where it just ends arbitrarily when the main character is just walking. No fade out or anything. Danan talks to his lady, and it seems like they are heading back to his shack for a romantic interlude (that would take the cake), but before any sort of closure could even be inferred, it just blacks out. THE END.
Ahh, what a stinker. At least it's a quick burn, though.
Anyone else play this feral piece of fromage?
