I was looking at some of the sms game reviews in the back of mean machines sega, 1 cought my eye which makes me wonder if they actually played some of the games they reviewd...
'Alex Kidd In High Tech World - A continuation of the Alex Kidd saga, this is essentially much of the same - more wacko platfrom action with loads of bonuses and other bits and bobs. Again, the graphics and sound are really good, but there's nothing that makes this any better than the original. - OVERALL 76%'
LOL slightly off topic but it doesnt warrent its own thread

That reminds me of the Simpsons episode when Bart has to make a book report in front of the class, and makes it up on the spot from the picture on the books cover.

Some of those scores are way off, Enduro Racer is class and you have to take in to consideration how old it is, it had already been out 5 years in 92 and only cost £10 new then. Ive never seen the point in scoring games out of 100 either, what the hell is the difference between a game that gets 31% and one that gets 32%

I was waiting for someone to say something like that!
The point is though when you score a games out of 100, do the reviewers think that a difference of one point would make you reconsider buying a game?.

I thought it would actually be better than having a range out of 10, as then two games which may be competely different in terms of appeal may end up with the same score, with 100 you have a larger range to play with.

well with a range of ten you have plenty of scope for every game:
1 - completely unplayable crap 5 - average 10 - as perfect as any game could be
and you a whole 7 other numbers to use. If a game gets a score of 51% its still an average game, so why not just give it 5/10.
A score out of 100 makes you think that they have studied each component of a game, graphics, sound etc, scored them individually then used some clever equations to work it all out, when in reality im sure they just made them up.

perhaps they ask 20 people in the office what they would give it out of 10 then work out the average, which could be somthing like 6.7 out of 10, so thay call it 67%. I can understand that but I see what your getting at.

Maybe we could have some sort of user rating for all the games listed on the site, or as many as possible? Each member here could give a rating and we could get an average for all games.

We don't do an overall rating for games on the site because it ends up giving a false overall impression of the game.
We chose to score each game component rather than give it an overall. The reason behind this is because some components are more important than others. For example, gameplay is the most important factor in any game. Far more important than Graphics, Sounds, controls or replay value. It simply wouldn't be fair to rate a game like Ultima IV or Golden Axe Warrior with this system. Both these games rely heavily on gameplay and are somewhat lacking in other departments.
Giving an average score also encourages readers to be lazy and just look at the overall score instead of actually taking time to read the review.
