Um...maybe i have other version of the games, but i can't see any similarity between master of darkness and ninja gaiden. the energy bars are totaly different: Round & Red on Master of Darkness and Grey/Silver Squares by Ninja Gaiden and all the other stuff in the bar is also really different even the colors are different And the playability is maybe similar cause they are both jump and runs and the ms gamepads have just two buttons so there aren't to much options

Yeah, I quite like Ninja Gaiden too, though I think the unlimited continues option made it too easy to complete. (I completed it a few hours after hiring it out). What does Gaiden mean by the way? I like the story for the game and the music is very good too.

Im not saying a word! i remember what we used to say it meant when this game first came out! Come on Say it ;D I found an interesting part in a faq: The Ninja Ryukenden (original title, meaning "Ninja Dragon Attack Story" ) series first appeared in arcades in 1988, initially created as an Arcade beat- em-up game. This ridiculously difficult game depicted a single Ninja, named Ryu Hayabusa (and - oddly enough for a ninja - unarmed for the majority of the game), sent on a quest to avenge his father's death. Ninja Gaiden ("Ninja Side Story", as the game was renamed for Americans) So Gaiden apparently means "Side Story" And if you wanna know what "ninja" means: The word "ninja" is comprised of two characters in Japanese. "Nin" and "Ja." The first means "Patience," and the second means "Person."

lol. I don't know really. I thought of creating this thread partly because I'd sometimes seen in Sega Games catalogues a section of Martial Arts games. Maybe someone could look up the word 'Martial Arts'. lol
Thanks ShadowAngel for sharing your wisdom:-) I found that interesting. Yes I think I know the arcade beat-em up you talk of. The one called 'Shadow Warriors' here? I enjoyed that game. Fed it enough coins to complete it. So that was Ryu Hayabusa in that game like in Ninja Gaiden? I remember the Shadow Warriors game on the NES. That game was more like the master systems's Ninja Gaiden. Very interesting storyline for this game. I'm still waiting to get a copy and find out how it ends.
Anyhow, I'm happy this thread produced so much musing over the various Martial Arts games.

My wisdom is limited to copy & paste from other peoples faq's ;D And yes the Game is Shadow Warriors, i checked it in mame...really a difficult game So about Martial Arts: The Word Martial Arts is just the name for all the Asian Fighting styles. I really don't find anywhere a meaning for it, but thats interesstin:Japanese people refer to martial arts as "Budo" ( "Bu" meaning "military" and " do" meaning "way" or "path" ) So it looks like that Martial Arts is just the english version of Budo

Can we consider Street Fifhter 2 a Martial Arts game??? If so, it´s a real achievement for the SMS and one of the crown jewels of my collection!!!

I think yes, street fighter is a martial arts game, the genre may be Beat em Up but the fighters have various fighting styles and they fight 1 on 1 so i guess we can count street fighter and mortal kombat as martial arts games.

I never liked Mortal Kombat (expect for Deadly Alliance wich is great) so for me all three games are crap. I have MK2 on the Master System (altough the games are forbidden here ) and i must say it sucks. Lame Gameplay, bad graphics and the typical crap mk-gameplay which is nothing compared to Street Fighter I found another game thats definitive a martial arts game: Dragon - The Bruce Lee Story ;D

Sega actually released Street Fighter 2 on the SMS? I never found out that. I would'nt have expected it to be that good, but I guess they may have modified it to somehow make it enjoyable.

Its a TecToy Release from 1997 so i guess its only available in Brazil altough i have a rom with UE ending which mean international version. One Bad thing is that there are just 8 Fighter (Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Guile, Blanka, Balrog, Sagat and Bison) even Vega is missing But the Graphics and Sounds are ok and its good to play and not as slow as mk. And with just 2 buttons its easier to play than other version with 6 buttons
