Hi folks I just thought I'd start a thread for discussing the various martial arts games for the SMS. Here I'll just start by talking about a few I like
Black Belt I felt was a good one,ok you're a bit limited in the range of attacking techniques, but I liked the fast pace of the levels, it kept me excited and the middle bosses were unique opponents. And I enjoyed the idea of the bosses having weak spots which was the key to defeating them with more ease, otherwise they were quite hard to beat. Took me a while to figure out the key to beating Rita at the end of Stage 5. Those parts where you finish off the boss at the end are nice to watch too.
Another fave of mine was Kenseiden (anyone know what that translates to in English?). Admitedly I completed the game very quickly. In a couple of day, but it was very challenging and fun so I stayed at the machine quite a while. Building up your skill, learning different skills from the scrolls was one thing I liked about this game. Being able to travel back and forward around Old Japan and choose which locations to visit, and then the practice halls. They were a reason to come back and play the game even after having completed it. Yeah I remember the enjoyment I had over the two days when I hired out this game.
Anyhow will anybody else share their thoughts on martial arts games?

I remember playing and liking Black Belt when I was younger. I agree it quite unique, easy to play and quite fun.
Another which springs to my mind is Kung Fu Kid. I remember beating it on my first couple of goes, and this was when I was quite young. Otherwise, it's quite a good little game which boasts better graphics than Black Belt.
Also, the two player in Double Dragon is great fun. My father/brother and I completed that game countless times and enjoyed it in all my days of having an SMS.
I had a few others but these I'd say are the ones worth mentioning.

Black belt and Kung fu kid were good Double dragon was good too but the best were MK, MKII and III(Mortal Kombat) and Streets of rage And Streets of rage II. Vigilante wasn't too good or renegade neither.

Cool. I never played Renegade. Was'nt all that attracted to it from the look of it. And Vigilante I was attracted to but found it very hard to fight well with skills the character has, especially the jumping moves. Even after all that I found it still quite easy to complete without having to master the controls very well, which is a disappointing way to complete a game.
Streets of Rage was ok. I would have liked to have played the arcade version of it. One of my fave arcade beat-em ups was Burning Fight (from SNK I think).
Shinobi for the MS I feel was quite good. I ended up using the level select cheat to complete the game, because I found progressing through the levels too hard. No continues and all, but I'd have to say the game is a good challenge. Too bad they removed some of the music from the arcade version which I liked a lot too. There were a few additions from the arcade version as I understand, a greater range of magic skills and whereas in the coin-op version you had only shurikens and the gun as projectile weapons and fists/feet and a sword as close range weapons, there were a couple more availible of each type in the console version.
Anyhow hope to hear more about some peoples enjoyment of martiel arts games. lol. I'm struggling to recall more martial arts games.

I remember a half-decent figting game I had called Masters of Combat. It ran much smoother than MK did and had pretty good graphics and decent moves. I suppose it was limited by it's four characters and master system's two buttons. I never really liked the SMS Streets of Rage because by that time I had already played it on the Mega Drive, and that version is twice as good. I agree Renegade and Vigilante were not that good and neither was My Hero if you consider that to be a martial arts game.

For me shinobi will always be the king of sms kung fu/platformers. i personally dont classify streetfighter 2, mk1+2 to be the same kind of game as shinobi, kensiden+kung fu kid. these in my oppinion are purely beat em'ups, where as shinobi has a bit more variety in gameplay.
One nobody has mentioned so far is cybershinobi, i dont think this is really a shinobi game, or it just doesnt feel like one. its a decent game in its own right and i enjoyed playing through it but its just not up to the standards of the original.

It's the same with Shadow Dancer, they're cheap Spin offs of Shinobi and aren't half as good as the Original, imo. But i think Cyber Shinobi is better than Shadow Dancer

One game that was a real dessapointment was Streets of Rage 2. The music and playability were ok, but the graphics were just miserable, especially if you take in consideration the ones in Streets of Rage.

Yeah the graphic is really bad but for me graphic isn't that important. Whats really bad about streets of rage is the missing 2 player mode

I Think that was one of the main problems. Ok you nearly every sports game had a 2 player mode, but thats it. Just think how cool would be Golden Axe with a 2 player mode

Street of Rage 2 made it onto Master System? I did'nt know that. I only played the Mega Drive version which I thought was very good (Never got round to playing SOR 3 though). lol. Streets of Rage 2 seemed to become more like Street Fighter 2, with all the fantastic special moves.
Heres another contribution to the martial arts games discussion. The Ninja. Yeah someone was right if they implied that Martial Arts games are perhaps just beat-em ups, but with the use of martial art style punching and kicking or weapons such as shurikens, oriental swords, nunchukus etc.
Anyhow I own a copy of the Ninja and I guess its a pretty decent game. Very challenging and lengthy and with the additional challenge of having to find all those hidden green scrolls on every level...that adds more depth to it. The story line which is set at the begining of the game, seems ok from what I remember of it. As I understand it was an arcade game to start with.

Yes but Streets of Rage 2 on the MS is nothing special. The first game is much better The Ninja is a good game altough i never beat it Another good game is Ninja Gaiden. Imo a real great game with good graphics and real fast gameplay. Its bad that they released only the first part on the ms

I agree The Ninja is a great game although I wouldn't consider it too much of a martial arts game. I recently got an SMS of eBay (wooo ;D) and I got this game with it. I completed it already but it is a good challenge and fun game. I also agree Ninja Gaiden is an excellent game. For the SMS's standard this is suprisingly good. Every apsect of it is good and I would recommend as a definite purchase if you're looking for a martial arts game.
