I can't help but feel I'm becoming more distant from modern gaming. For me modern consoles have very few games which appeal to me.The few gems that I think look good often end up being boring.
What is it nowadays that all games have to be very deep?
I'm starting to think its me that's impatient. But why is it that all games begin with a either a very lengthy cut-scene and story or some rather annoying tutorial that seems to last forever. All I want to do so shoot some things!
I tried sitting down and getting to play "Full Spectrum Warrior" on the Xbox - I didn't make it past the tutorial without getting really bored and frustrated.
I tried Fable, and I ususally like adventure games, but the tedious tutorial style intro and all the cut scenes drove me around the twist.
I'm interested in what other people's opinions of modern games are. And tell me am I losing my love for games? Why can't I seem to focus on just one?

I was actually thinking about this the other day when one of my game-loving friends (not the good kind) was trying to persuade me to try a dozen or so new Windows games... You've hit the nail on the head, I think; they try too hard and over complicate things.
I like games where I can sit down and get straight into them - quick fun, in other words. If I have a spare ten, twenty, thirty minutes, or whatever - even five - I can just stick in one of my old console games and have fun, not needing to dedicate a lot of time to it. They generally don't take more than a few seconds to get the hang of, either. Nothing a quick perusal of the manual can't fix. :)
Some modern games do conform to this, allowing me to play them. Mainly FPS games. I can just reload from a save point, shoot stuff, hit F5 (save), then exit - providing the load times aren't too long. Conversely, I expect there are some old SMS games which take a while to get into - but none spring to mind.
I know not everyone will agree with this and I know that I made some generalisations, but these are my views - you're all free to disagree/argue. :)

Most of the modern games i get are sports games, such as Pro Evo, Football manager and NHL, these games are simply better than anything retro in terms of gameplay (great as Sensi was the players just dont control as realisticly), having said that most over forms of gaming do seem to have gone down hill since 3d arrived, the platforming and beat em up genres are perfect examples, but I do quite like some modern rpgs, Final Fantasy isnt that fantastic anymore, but I thought Fable and KOTOR were a good laugh.

I am the same, i cant stand any game that i cant get into playing within a minute, but that also means i dont like any complicated rpg or strategy game either.
The stupid tutorials games force you to complete are a complete nightmare. Each game presumes you have never played a video game in your entire life. So you end up spending 10 minutes being told A is jump etc, when if you were allowed to just press the buttons and work it out yourself you would figure them out in 30 seconds. Its just bad design, instead of tutorials, the first levels of the game should be relativley easy, thats how its always been done before. On one of the recent Bond games, i actually got stuck on the tutorial, and had to consult the manual, which defies the whole point of the tutorial in the first place.
The Dreamcast didnt have any of this nonsense and its games were all really easy to get into, Crazy Taxi, shenmue, hotd2, its tragic that it never lasted, sega were really at the top of their game then.
There are some great games this generation, or last gen as we are probably supposed to call it now, you just need to search them out: Resident Evil 4 - seriously get this on gamecube its an amazing action game Alien hominid Outrun 2 Super monkey ball Viewtiful Joe Downhill domination Rygar legendary adventure
And theres plenty of good stuff on DS

I'd have to agree with Krooper on this one - I hate all modern games except sports games which are excellent. I prefer and have always preferred my video games to LOOK like video games. I prefer a nice cartoony type game instead of something programmed to look like a dvd - if I wanted that, I'd put on a dvd!!!

Its a shame if you completely avoid modern games other than sports as your missing out on some great games. If you have a ps2 or gamecube pick up a copy of Viewtiful Joe, its only a couple of quid on ebay, it play like an old school game, but with the power of a modern console to really pump out some awesome graphics, it all looks like a hand drawn comic. There plenty of other wierd fun games out there, if you want any suggestions ive got plenty of modern games i could recommend.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I've got quite a few games for modern systems - but they're simply not the same as the trusty old SMS! ;D

The problem with new games is that the publishers try to pack every new feature and make every graphic look stunning, so the gameplay really stinks. Like playgeneration said, there are a few that are good.
Alien Hominid - Great sidescroller shooting game made by the people over at Newgrounds.com Super Monkey Ball - Great, fun, game, but kinda hard to get the hang of.

I generally hate newer games as well. There are a few good ones, if you take the time to learn them, but most of it is drivel anymore; first-person shooters, killing games like Hitman and Gun which are essentially the same damn game in different time periods, rehashes on old classics and other ones with crap blowing up everywhere and too much time spent on cinematics. Seriously, one of the biggest draws about old games to me is that it's an art form in a sense, the programmers had to have a keen eye for color schemes and where to put certain pixels when making their games and anymore we're simply getting closer and closer to everything looking like real life. I find little character anymore, regardless of how fun some may be. Nintendo keeps reusing characters that were made famous on the NES, Sega programs games for other systems using Sonic and everyone else pretty much doesn't have anything noteworthy. Name a character from a PS2 or XBox game that you could say is the mascot for the system. That's right, there are none, and primarily because companies now make the same game for every system and thus you have little variety. What console specific games may exist are generally average with the occasional gem, but I haven't seen many. I would say all of this craziness has to have an end somewhere once the graphics go so far, before we eventually have true virtual reality or you can plug the systems into your brain. By that time I'll be hidden away in my cave playing old systems until the final collapse of the industry.

I wish they would just stop releasing games every two minutes! That's what it seems like they do! What happened to when it took them a year or two to make a single game?

Actually, I just had a realisation - there is one type of 'modern' game that I do love - the sims! I have been hooked on it for a long time. Had it for my N-gage for months and never played it, but then I was bored on the train one day or something and had a go at it, ended up totally and utterly hooked on it! I've actually not played it ni a while, but my gf has a serious addiction to it now!

Although I consider myself an "old-school gamer", some modern games are just too awesome to pass by. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue II, and Out Run 2 are absolutely great modern Sega games. I also think Half-Life 2 is excellent, as well as the Brothers In Arms games (2nd one moreso). They both take the FPS genre past the mindless run n' gun gameplay.

Oh, I do play some modern ones, I like the World Builder series like Caesar III and Pharoah, but other than that and a few here and there such as Diablo II I really don't care what they release. It would take a lot of innovation and character to get me interested.
