It would have been interesting to see how they fared on the system, but overall it has a ton of its own great games, some of which are much better than many NES titles. Adventure Island was a stolen version of Wonderboy, by the way, look at the characters section on the site and read about it.

The Mega Man games were good, I suppose the SMS alternative is Psychic World (massively underrated game). We have a Castlevania alternative with Master of Darkness. Adventure Island is pretty much the same as Wonder Boy. The only disappointment is that there's no Contra-like game for the SMS. I reckon it could have been done so much better on the SMS and it would have been a fantastic game. I suppose there's E-Swat, Quartet and the Robocop games, but they're not quite the same.
Some games I would like to have seen were some of the Disney games, like Chip n' Dale and Duck Tales. Overall, I believe there are a lot more good games on the SMS than there are on the NES.

Ski or Die and Skate or Die! I loved those games, nothing quite like them on the SMS.

I guess the most similar thing to a Mega Man game on the Master System would have been an actual reprogramming of the Mega Man game for the Game Gear, done by Freestyle Sofware and US Gold, to work on the Master System. Capcom itself would have never done anything.
As for Contra, being an arcade game, it could have been licensed by someone else (possibly, Sega) to be reprogrammed for the Master System. That's the way this one got ports for several 8-bit computers (done by Ocean), and that's also the way some other Japanese arcade games (mostly from Capcom, Technos and Taito) hit the Master System. Konami itself is another one who would have never done anything, neither with Contra nor with Castlevania, but this one had the problem of being a home targeted game rather than an arcade game that could be licensed (sure we are not talking about the crappy Haunted Castle).
Adventure Island is a Wonder Boy clone. End of the question.

Dude, Psychic World has an awesome plot, awesome control, awesome gameplay (especially the integration of your skills and such), awesome graphics and so forth. YOU'RE NUTS. Clearly you didn't play it enough.
