So we just had an easy thread, and I just got through playing a few tough games, so why not make a yang to blitho's ying? What are the toughest SMS games you've played? Rank 'em, and I'll do the tally afterwards.
1. POWER STRIKE - This is a great shmup, but man, what a learning curve. Most of these games at least let you get comfortable with the control scheme, but this one throws you right into hard difficulty. There are so many enemies and so much crossfire, making it through the first level is a pretty monumental achievement.
2. MICHAEL JACKSON'S MOONWALKER - Not too bad most of the way through, rescuing kids and such, but the last two shooter-esque levels are damn near impossible. The first one takes a few tries, but the second one is some of the toughest gaming I've ever experienced. You can only shoot one of the four guns when it momentarily makes itself available and while that's happening the other three are shooting homing missiles at you. When shooting out the pods, you have to shoot before you even see them move, essentially guessing which one will be open. So really, there's no technique, only luck. It took me a good 100 rounds and a couple nights to finish. Argh!
3. ALEX KIDD IN HIGH-TECH WORLD - The opening RPG-esque bit in the house is maddening with all its random deaths and items and tasks. Really, it takes a lot of trial and error and error and error to master it, and even then some of the things you need to do are so random figuring them out without a tutorial is near impossible. The funny thing is - that's not even the hard part! The two action levels with ninjas are even tougher, since you have to be so precise, and with only one hit available and no checkpoints, you're going to need a lot of luck. Throwing stars come from all directions, and then some tough platforming comes in during the middle to make it even more of a challenge. I won't even get into the "praying to the gaming gods 100 times in a row" thing during the second RPG component.
4. GANGSTER TOWN - A fun shooter with a lot of variety, but after the first few levels the difficulty really escalates. Playing it with two players helps, but even then you need to be Dirty Harry to get past level four.
5. MY HERO - There's a million other games like it (and better), like E-SWAT, VIGILANTE, DOUBLE DRAGON, etc. but this one takes the cake for difficulty. Enemies come so fast, and again, with only a single hit and limited continues, I don't think your girlfriend will ever be saved.
I've yet to play most Euro games, which is why THE TERMINATOR isn't included here. Let's hear from the rest of you, though!
