So I finally busted this one out after months of owning it - what an experience. Forget the Power Pad on the NES, using the Sports Pad on Great Ice Hockey is the greatest of all 8-bit workouts. You don't have to push anything to steal the puck, you just sort of touch it and then you're home free. Since the opposition doesn't really move much, this leaves you even more room to just go ape on the trackball. What a rush it is then, to pick it up in your end and track all the way to the other end for the goal. It's not just a matter of hitting over, or even just moving the trackball slowly. You have to really give it. I really don't know what they were thinking programming this, but it's so ludicrous how much you have to move that ball just to skate, it's borderline brilliant. I played it for about 10 minutes before my wrist gave out, and now, when these cold Canadian winters make it undesirable for me to go to the gym, I know exactly what I'll do.
Anyone else love the sheer physical workout that Great Ice Hockey requires?

oh, and incase you find the pad to be abit to big and bulky, the japanese one is considerbley smaller...

That was a good read, I'm glad to see others have felt the pain of the Sports Pad. I honestly didn't think the control was that bad though - it was fun, just so tiring. The only time you go in random directions is if you don't have it switched to the "Sports" option. I'm not a big football fan, but I'll have to try it out.
The pad is actually pretty good for SPACE HARRIER though. In fact, I probably prefer it, especially with the rapid fire.
The Japanese always knew how to make things better and smaller, and that's no exception. Thanks for the pics, rupert, I had no idea.
