OK, I bought a copy of "Beyond Oasis" for the Sega Genesis with crappy home-made art like those SMS games pictured in that link, but I could see an insert for the SMS version of Altered Beast. I opened it up and sure enough it was Beyond Oais.
I wonder if they are related, haha.

That to me looks exactly like it must be mock up art work. I'm guessing it would be very rare and a great find! i've no idea why else it would be like that or how you would get hold of the image to make it other than it being a ligit proto cover. I wish it was mine!

Hmmmm, this couldn't be some lame rental thing could it? Could even be mock-ups they used to take pictures with for ads and such.

Could even be mock-ups they used to take pictures with for ads and such. the guy said they are actual photographs cut out and layed on and the lettering is also cut out and stuck down. why else other than concept/ proto cover? who would have actual photo's of the guy dressed in the Sega outfit and why cut them out to make a cover of a game if it wasnt for the purposes of making the cover?

True, but, if it were me it would bug me not to have a cover, so I'd go to a mag to cut out that picture and make it myself. Still, it's more likely it's production, but you never know.
