I played the arcade and Genesis version, but just recently got my hands on the SMS version. Granted, I played it a couple times via emulator, but for the real deal...amazing.
I didn't get much playtime, and got to Round 4, but I am impressed. The game looks and sounds great, and overall it is an awesome game. It has flaws, but considering what was done for a SMS port, I can't complain.
It did glitch on me once, not loading all of Round 2, but it worked properly on a reset. Thanks again to nearbythiscafe for fixing me up. I hope to get some more play with it. I did notice it shares some sound effects with Double Dragon...a favorite of mine.

It's incredibly impressive for a port. What they were able to keep while removing other elements was a real challenge. Still prefer the Zelda knock-off.

I have noticed that with ports from stronger consoles, if you will. It stinks that certain things get removed, and some people don't seem to comprehend this...but what they pushed out is amazing.
Mortal Kombat is another example...but this is about Golden Axe.
IF a second player option was squeezed in, I'm not quite sure how fun that would be. By myself on a test run, I got far. Toss in a second player and it would be very easy. I think it is just right for single player. At least they give the option to choose magic, which I really like.
The characters do move fast, but I was able to adjust. I like how the bosses were shrunk. I find myself going for the beasts in this version, compared to the 16-bit. I hardly use them, but this version, I found them easier to control...if that makes sense.
I am looking forward to being able to actually play it. I want to today...but considering I have been up since 3am...I am feeling the tiredness hitting me.

Due to the way the game works, I don't think 2 player would really have been possible. It's not a case of too much flicker, which is probably the reason for Streets of Rage lacking the second player option.

GA was one of my first games - and first to cause me a game rage nervous breakdown (trying to beat my friend's score)

My first impression of this game is that it is remarkably similar to the 16 bit version, there are differences and shortcomings obviously (only one player, controls aren't as Precise, no additional players to choose from.)
The Genesis version wasn't as good as the arcade, the SMS version isn't as nice as the 16 bit version but it's basically the same game

Still trying to get the hang of this. My strategy didn't go as planned. Skeletons and those ladies riding the beasts get me.

I've not played Golden Axe in years, but it was one of the games I had originally back in the early 90's, and I do remember being very impressed with it when I got it. Sprite size is excellent, and I actually think the overall gameplay speed and responsiveness it very good. I'm tempted to get it out of its box and have a go now!

I liked the look of it but was taken aback when it started to move with the lack of animations in the characters, but more recently I have a lot more respect for it because thinking about it for the time and what they had available it is actually a good strong port and worth a play.

There's a few games I need to get for this system and Golden Axe is, I'm ashamed to say, still one of them. I enjoy the Megadrive games a lot, though I only own a physical copy of GA2 at present. And I also have the fighting game for the Saturn which isn't bad at all. Still wish the Saturn got Revenge Of Death Adder, that was strangely never ported to anything.
