Heres a scenario for you all to consider.....
The year is 1997, your favourite game store is closing down. They have every sms game ever in stock, you can choose 12 games but with 2 conditions: 1. you can never own any other sms games 2. you can never sell these games, ever.
Which 12 games do you choose and why?
Heres my list
1. Micro Machines: It needs no explanation 2. Putt and Putter: while working away I have been playing this on my sms/gg handheld thing, very addictive. 3. Lemmings: One of my favourite games, ever. Not one that can be completed easily. 4. Rampart: The sms was one of the best versions of this. 5. Speedball 2: Just out and out fun 6. Prince of Persia: one of the games that got me into gaming 7. Ninja Gaiden: of all the ninja games on the sms, this is the best. 8. Buggy Run: its actually good, what can I say? 9. Sensible Soccer: I'm a sensible soccer addict, so this has to go in 10. Mortal Kombat 2: Everyone needs a beat em up 11. Out Run Europa: A really interesting addition to the Out Run Series 12. Slap Shot: Well, I love Ice Hockey....

In the spirit of the 1997 starting point, I'm doing this list excluding any SMS games I owned before that point albeit with current knowledge of the games - otherwise it'd just be my 12 favourite games!
1. Assault City (light phaser) - I could never find this game, so in 1997 if I could choose from the entire catalogue I'd pick this! Also it's pretty good, which is always helpful
2. Gain Ground - a belated favourite of mine really (discovered via the PS360 Mega Drive compilation), I love how tense the stratgeic element can get. This has enough exclusive content to recommend in addition to the Mega Drive version
3. Power Strike II - because I passed this up in 1993, loving the original to the point where a sequel would probably be a disappointment (it wasn't, but the original is better)
4. Sagaia - the arcade game looked cool but it was about 50p a credit when everything else was 10p... so I never got into it and overlooked what is a very impressive home port
5. Zillion - this deserves an entry for the music alone, but add on super-geeky map making and symbol memorising (yeah yeah they're actually just numbers but it's more fun to recite "bum, M, legs, ladybird")!
6. Streets of Rage - because my friends were usually either rubbish or obnoxious weapon stealers, a single player only version suits me just fine!
7. Sonic The Hedgehog - yes, I never actually owned this at the time because everyone else did and I cleared it after a few lends. Still a great game though.
8. The Ninja - assumes hidden scroll locations are known otherwise I would hate this. But also - ninjas disguised as wolves to avoid animal cruelty and boss fights against a man with a beehive on his head!
9. Astro Warrior (version that ends) - Star Force was an early favourite arcade game and this is the closest you can get to it on the SMS without someone having a bit of sense and upgrading the SG-1000 port of Star Force
10. Secret Command - other great arcade games: Commando and Ikari Warriors. This is the next best thing on the SMS (Mercs is super easy and does not count) even if the guy is soooo sloooow
11. Cyborg Hunter - another often played on a lend (never cleared because I couldn't get to the final boss with enough health to suss him out), this is a cool adventure with a great atmosphere and some cheeky mechanics (a literal light gun that lets you see in the dark)
12. Super Smash TV - dunno why this gets so much flak, the arcade original is similarly impossible without the loads of credits this version gives you. It's pretty much just mindless blasting and that's okay in my book!

I'll be pretty far going with games I have/had... (except last two)
1. Phantasy Star 2. Populous 3. Wonder Boy III 4. Dragon Crystal 5. Tennis Ace 6. Slap Shot 7. Rampage 8. The Ninja 9. Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting / Safari Hunt (if that counts as one; if not replace with Lemmings) 10. Super Kick Off 11. Basketball Nightmare 12. Road Rash
JRPG is one of my favorite genres so 1 is must, as well as 4 which as rogue-like has replay value, that being main factor for having so many sports games (5,6,10,11). 7&8 are bit of personal nostalgia... (even more than others) 3 for platformer (have to pick one, even I don't like the genre much), 12 for racing, 9 for LP to cover genres for some variety. And 2 for tons of levels and as strategy game.

We probably should have included a 3D game and a Light Phaser game, to take advantage of all the system's capabilities.

1. Sonic the hedgehog- sega is nothing without sonic! Just such a classic 2. Psycho fox- a game I absolutely love, graphics are colourful and it's just a fun game. 3. Wonderboy in monster land - I have recently got hooked to this game and one day will get pass the maze 4. Mickey Mouse and castle of illusion- great childhood memories of this game. 5. Donald Duck and the lucky dime caper- how can you not love Donald? 6. Paperboy- I can't actually get pass level 2, so I might achieve that with only having 12 games to play. 7. Mortal kombat- has always been a favourite though graphics are much better on MD 8- pit pot- really enjoyed this game, after playing it from the game club 9- smurfs 2 - I like platformers and have done a few levels so would like to actually finish it 10- shinobi- was a childhood game I have fond memories off 11- The lion king - come on its simba?! 12- fantasy zone - was obsessed with this game!

1. Alex Kidd in Miracle World 2. Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Castle of Illusion 4. Shinobi 5. Wonderboy in Monsterland 6. Ultima IV 7. Sensible Soccer 8. Power Strike 9. Micro Machines 10. Bubble Bobble 11. Parlour Games 12. Ghostbusters
1-5 are the usual platform suspects. Ultima because as an RPG it takes some time. Rest to cover some more genres, Parlour Games features three games, so there's some padding and i like Ghostbusters as everybody knows.

Based on the conditions, I chose the games I could play over and over:
1. Sonic the Hedgehog Greatest game ever. To this day I'm still making high score record attempts
2. Alex Kidd in Miracle World Such a fun classic game
3. Wonder Boy III Again, a fun classic game but with a longer play time and more to explore
4. Phantasy Star Need an RPG in there to keep me buy for a while, and you don't get better than this
5. Game Box Série Lutas Going by the conditions, this isn't cheating as far as I'm concerned. 3 excellent ninja games on 1 cart.
6. Zillion Challenging game with plenty of hours of enjoyment to be had
7. Power Strike II I love a shmup, and this is the best on the system
8. Wimbledon I enjoy sports and this is the best tennis game on the system
9. Tecmo World Cup 93 Continuing with sports, this is the best football game on the system
10. Master of Darkness One of my all-time favourites. Very atmospheric and great to stick on at Halloween
11. Psychic World Love this game. Very playable with a great story / cutscenes
12. Wonder Boy in Monster World I come back to this game quite often. It's a great challenge and fun to play
So there you go. There's a lot of great games I've missed out but I'm happy with my choices. I suddenly feel like taking some time off work, sitting indoors all week and just playing these games!

1- Sonic The Hedgehog - Perfect game. So much better than its big brother incarnation.
2- Wonderboy in Monster World. - My favourite ever SMS adventure game. Cutesy graphic and intense gameplay.
3 - Putt & Putter - Fun 1 or 2 player miniature golf fun.
4- Great Golf (Japanese version) - So much better than the Western version. One of the courses is a giant bunker full of cacti. Simple, but really enjoyable.
5- Castle of Illusion - amazing platformer, fun and challenging.
6 - Land of Illusion - more of the same Disney magic, but a lot bigger....
7 - Battle Outrun - I love this game, better than Chase HQ on the MS....
8 - Cheese Catastrophie starring Speedy Gonzalas - I love mice and cheese. This game has both.
9 - Streets of Rage. A perfect 1 player beat 'em up. Great graphics and music.
10 - Road Rash - A great 8 bit version. Very challenging in later levels. Well worth donning your leathers on to play this...
11- Techmo World Cup 93 - Hate to agree with Ian, but looking at the woeful sms footie games library this side scrolling offering is a blast to play.... 12- World Grand Prix - Definitely the best racing game on the sms. I was going to chose Micro Machines, but that would be on my Mega Drive dirty dozen list...
