It's a case of each to their own I think. I have a main collection that is fully complete, a second collection of complete duplicates that I display on the walls of my man cave and a third set of loose carts that I play. I don't tend to sell anything but prefer to trade with other collectors were possible. With regard to boxes I swap out bad ones with good ones from my duplicates. I've never come across new clamshell boxes, do you have any picks or links to the seller?

I guess if a lack of space ever became an issue I would go cart only. But for now I got to have everything CIB, if the game has a unique poster I will be wanting that also. If something was to expensive or hard to find I would just emulate rather than going down the reproduction route,

I only buy single carts if they are a real bargain (like the Championship Hockey for 3€ ) or as part of a collection with other CIB games. Sometimes the collections come with empty cases so that I have an actual use for the leftover carts. Oh, and another application: Carts make it a lot easier to sell off the gargantual amount of console base units that accumulate over time.

before i bought my everdrive, everything was bought because i wanted to play it.
most of my cart only games were £2 or less, i find it hard to believe anyone would turn down the chance to own a game they hadn't played before for those prices (some were as low as 50p), if you would turn down that chance, your loss

I have a couple of SNES cart only games (one came unboxed with my SNES, one I bought box and manual, and another donated to me) but really, sod SNES prices in general. I also threw out all my GBA boxes for some ridiculous space-related reason.
When I bought a MD it came with Sonic 1 and 2 cart only, which I sinced traded in against other stuff. Both were in fairly shoddy condition anyway.
I guess when it comes down to it, I prefer to have games as I'd have bought them originally - complete. I don't even have anything else unboxed or even missing a manual. If I see a loose bargain in the wild I'd probably pick it up just pass it on to someone who really wants it!

CIB. I like the look f them when they are displayed. Cart only displays very poorly. No top label to identify the game on most (if not all of them)By CIB I mean Case Cart and Instructions. The other stuff (posters etc.) are nice extras, but I am not fussed about them. Not stuck on hang tags either.

As a kid, condition never really mattered to me so I ended up with plenty of cart only games, many of them in truly awful shape.
Over the past few years, I've gotten way more picky about that stuff and now only buy nice CIB games partly because I want my things to be nice and partly because (theoretically) it would keep me from spending too much money at one time.
And just as a warning to everyone, I bought some of those cases from Custom Game Cases when they first released them, and they botched the measurements. The part that holds the actual game is slightly too small, so you have to really force a game to fit into them (which I didn't want to do since it risked messing up the cart label) and if you do that, the plastic around it will be visibly bent. Maybe they've improved them since then, but I certainly wont be buying any more after getting burned the first time around.

I've never collected my SMS games loose because there's just nothing to look at. Genesis/Megadrive games, however, I have no problem collecting loose because I'm more interested in the gaming side of that system and the labels have fun art. Same goes for most other systems I collect. The only exception to that rule is RPGs, which I always purchase complete with as much maps, booklets, and such as possible.

I don't mind buying cart only though as long as I have a spare case, I'll then print the best cover i can find for it. Would say the majority, probably 80%+ of my collection are original but the ones I've printed the sleeves for are pretty good. I always buy cases whenever I see them cheap, the local indie games shop had a load of CIB games at £1 when I started collecting, all: world grand prix, world soccer, super kick off etc. Needless to say I bought what I could. I was also lucky to get a job-lot of cases with sleeves and instructions but no carts cheap on eBay, giving me the option of scoring cart only and having some real cheap CIB games at the end of it. Quick question: The paper I use to print the sleeves is a little thick, looks pretty good but could be better: Has anyone found a decent paper for printing sleeves, if so, what is it and where do you get it? Many thanks

SMS Power is probably the best for SMS but some are pretty low quality, SMS Power. There is a sleeve for Summer Games here too that doesn't look too bad. The Cover Project can be useful sometimes, but they often need resizing, is brilliant for some other systems too, thecoverproject
I tend to find my reproductions are a little too white, partly due to the new paper, to a trained eye they are clearly visible as copies but I still prefer them to having the cart displayed unboxed or with a plain box. I think most look pretty good once I'm done tweeting them, that said, to the untrained eye of my fiancé most are still obvious; so maybe they aren't as good as I think!

I was idly thinking about taking all my original sleeves out, scanning them and then storing them in a lightless place, and replacing them all with prints of the scans for keeping the carts on a display shelf. Even without direct sunlight some fading can occur just from the ambient daylight, it seems. As time goes on I can see how my hobbyist interest in collecting games will necessarily evolve into a more serious preservationist responsibility, and frankly I wonder whether I'll have the resources and skill to do that well enough.
