Most of us are probably well versed in the biggies of the industry but every once in awhile a game slips under the radar that probably shouldn't have. Anyone discover any cool games from the past this summer that, for whatever reason, never made a blip? I got bored one night and so I decided to install some of the cores for Openemu that I hadn't checked out yet. The Turbografx system is one that never held a lot of allure for me but I thought I'd see for myself if I was missing anything. While I'm not overly impressed with the system there are a couple games for it that stood out for me.
First, while I'm not averse to strategy games I'm usually not drawn to them either. However Military Madness is an enjoyable battle for the moon that moves at a good clip and never gets too bogged down by resource management or an overabundance of options. I think this is a TG exclusive as I've never seen it anywhere else. I haven't played too far into it yet but I'm going back for more because it seems fun.
Second, is the real hidden gem. Photograph Boy is a great game! It's a non-translated Japanese game. You won't be able to read the menus but that won't really matter. You'll figure it out easily enough. You work for a newspaper editor who seems angrier than J. Jonah Jameson. This guy's not happy unless you bring him $10000 worth of snaps; which ain't easy because you'll have to move quick to catch the increasingly spectacular photo ops while avoiding obstacles coming at you like skateboards and bouncing balls. If these hit you you'll see stars and be dazed for a few seconds (probably missing a great shot in that time) and you'll drop some of your rolls of film, making it much more difficult to reach your $10000 goal. Thankfully, when you manage to capture a great shot your subject will often drop some film for you to pick up, allowing you to continue along your quest. Of course, the more outrageous the photo the higher the dollar value. While it's a game of reflex you probably won't be able to move the reticule around fast enough with a dpad or stick without some pattern memorization. It probably would've made a better light gun game but don't let that stop you. This one's a winner and half the fun is just trying to see what spectacular or absurd photo op comes next. This is Japanese wackiness at it's best!
BTW, I discovered this is also available as a Japanese import for the PS1 in the Simple 1500 series.
