I've noticed there are a fair number of Master System games that didn't make it to the US (or they only showed up here as Game Gear games), I've managed to pick up a few over the years (thanks mostly to that handful of European games that got released in Canada), but I'm sure there are plenty more waiting to be found.
Do you guys have any recommendations? Any ones to avoid?

Using the top 20 out of the top 100 list, the last 16 in the Tournament and the games on the current Awards list, the top European games that weren't released in the US are:
Assault City Asterix Bubble Bobble Deep Duck Trouble Desert Strike Gain Ground Land of Illusion Lemmings Lucky Dime Caper Master of Darkness Masters of Combat Micro Machines Ninja Gaiden Populous Power Strike II Putt & Putter Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Speedball 2 Streets of Rage Super Off Road Tecmo World Cup '93 Wonder Boy in Monster World
And also using the Awards list, avoid the following:
Back to the Future II Championship Hockey Heroes of the Lance Pit Fighter
Edit: Should be noted that Assault City was included for best music and Deep Duck Trouble for best graphics in the awards, even though both are good games they are not necessarily great games or among the best in their genre.

Assault City is a really fun lightgun style game, but the most common version is pad only. If you're interested, there is a far superior light phaser version but it's much much rarer.

Wonder Boy in Monster World Good list, but Monster World is only recommended on the Mega Drive. The Master System version has a great soundtrack, but the game is very downgraded compared to the Mega Drive version. The 2nd game in the series, Monster Land, is a very good choice here.

Yeah, I should have pointed out that Monster World is another game included because it's in the Best Graphics genre in the awards. I find the game a bit annoying especially since the sword/dagger in the beginning (don't know if it get's better, haven't played it far enough) has such a short span that you have to be right next to the monsters.

What games genre do you prefer? It may be best to start with thinking about games you have and like then see what is comparable in the PAL market.

I absolutely love light gun games, but I've already tracked all of those down, even the European-only ones.
I tend to like platformers and shooters, but I'm open to pretty much all genres. About the only things I'm not interested in are ports of games available on other systems (like Strider, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, etc), unless the Master System versions offer new levels/gameplay (like Castle of Illusion).
Some of my favorite Master System games off the top of my head are Montezuma's Revenge, Wonder Boy 3, Zillion, and Psycho Fox.

I have a question about Ultima 4.
Did they all originally come with those 2 extra booklets, or was that something that was only done for the first run of the game?

How deep are your pockets? Power Strike II is amazing but on the pricey side. Sagaia is another good one but got a Mega Drive port in Japan and the US (and technically a Saturn port too but. The SMS port isn't worthless though, it's actually really close to the MD version. Did Scramble Spirits get a US release? I assume so based on the age but it's the best home port and a fun game nonetheless. Most other shmups and shooters that were PAL only also got Mega Drive releases, and anything pre-1991 got a US release... I'll see if I can think of any others later!

I've never really cared for the Aleste/Power Strike series (something about it just doesn't feel right when I'm playing them), so I wasn't planning to get that one (and the price isn't helping matters either).
I did like Scramble Spirits the little bit I got to play of it.

I always thought it should have been...released in Canada and apparently Mexico as well. I see it listed on Mercado libre quite often. Unfortunately I don't know anyone in Mexico to confirm this or help me out when I see a good deal on any game. I don't know why I torture myself and continue to to look at that site

Scramble Spirits is another game like Ultima 4 that apparently did get at least a limited release in the U.S., as it was reviewed at the time in U.S. magazines.

I encountered a beat up copy of Scramble Spirits down in Ohio a few years back. But what with it being 20+ years later that could have gotten there from a countless number of ways.
