Hey guys I was visiting this site for the databse a few times already and now decided to register because of something weird that I saw on TV here in Germany about a week ago. Obviously you don't see much video game things on TV but when zapping through the program one night I saw a small section on a show about old consoles and especially the Master System. They had an "expert" to check out some guys old Master System games and put a value on them which of course weren't really correct. However I was quite shocked to see that in the stack the guy had was a copy of Smurfs 2. The so called expert valued that game at about 100€ which is ridiculously low of course and later they sold it to some collector. I am almost 100% sure that this was all set up because you don't find a game like Smurfs 2 randomly while visiting a random guy with a camera team. So here are the options: 1. The TV station bought a copy of the game after googling which one might be the rarest. However in that case they'd know it's worth significantly more than 100€. 2. The collector they "sold" the came to afterwards actually was the owner of that game all along. Again it would be fair to assume he told them how much the game was worth. 3. They printed out a cover and just put it in a case. They didn't open the case so the manual and cart weren't shown. Of course it could all just be a ridiculous coincidence but I'd like to know from you guys if anybody happens to know that collector or could definitely say that the cover is a fake. The link to the clip of that episode which is obviously all in german but they are basically just talking nonsense like they do most of the time on TV . The interesting part begins at 7:10. www.kabeleins.de/tv/abenteuer-leben/videos/kontrastreportage-80er-vs-heute-clip

If the person bought it for 100€ then that's the value for that person. It is only "ridiculously low" as you are focusing on contemporary eBay but the game is in way more hands that this thread suggest and has been going for all kind of prices on all kind of local collector communities.

I see. The main point I was trying to make was how obviously set up the situation was. The game might not be as rare as the list suggests but still. The chance of finding a game like that in some random guys old stuff just seems incredibly low and about as high as finding something like a Caltron 6 in 1 or a PAL Captain Commando for the SNES. In addition to that I've never seen this game here in Germany ever. I'm not sure if there is a list for that as well but it would be interesting to see how many copies were actually found in each country. I'd assume that Germany would be fairly low on that list. PS: I tried to find a video of that on other sites but wasn't succesful . Maybe they will upload it to youtube like they sometimes do.

Possibly the situation was fake, however I think Germany is the third country in order of Smurfs2 appearances after Czech Republic and Italy. Because it borders with Czech Republic some German people had bought the game back in the day. I've seen a few auctions of Smurfs2 from Germany, especially from areas near the border.
Unfortunately me neither can see the video...

Oh really? I haven't seen a copy here for sale ever. Be it online or at conventions. However I'm not a huge Master System nut so I probably missed something. Just getting back into the system after not having done a lot with it in a half year or so

I'd not be surprised it this was set up, from what I heard on the Bombcast, reality TV is 90%+ fake.

It wasn't even reality TV but rather a lifestyle/documentary type show. I would never watch reality TV because it's the worst and laziest type of television you can possibly make. Watching that crap is pathetic

The situation was indeed a fake. The seller as well as the buyer are both collectors (the guys who organize Retrobörse as far as i remember) This video was already discussed on nexgam.de some years ago; but i could not find the thread...
