It`s a shame Buggy Run sold in such low numbers. It`s one of the most fun driving games on the SMS, especially the Sumo-style battles and the landmines to blow up other buggies. It`s one of the rare games that is actually worth playing unlike the wretched Home Alone.

The main problem for Buggy Run is the non-existing 2(or 4)-player mode in the career mode. It would have been an excellent alternative for R.C. Grand Prix fans then. But racing games for one player only are always sad.

It's a commendable isometric racer, but the genre itself was technically dated and you only had Rock 'n' Roll Racing's combat focus giving it something new on 16-bit. What hope did an SMS game have? As with Power Strike II - take a flagging genre and put it onto a console on its last legs... you won't end up with a hit. But while shmups continued to have a cult following, isometric racers completely died out so no-one really remembers it.
Gaming was moving pretty fast back then, so even release a year earlier might have helped - but it would've still been old hat and hard to get people on board with it.

It's a commendable isometric racer, but the genre itself was technically dated I would disagree. If anything Isometric Racers had somewhat of a second spring in the early to mid 90's with Skidmarks and it's sequel Super Skidmarks being very successful on the Amiga, Visco releasing Drift Out '94 in the arcades and Neo Drift Out on the Neo Geo/arcade (still considered the best racing game on the console), OverTop on the Neo Geo in 1996, Biker Mice from Mars on the SNES around the same time.

There is always Enduro Racer. It's so good that's all there should ever need to be.

Amiga and NeoGeo are fairly niche though. For racing games, the expectation on 16-bit was Mode 7 or trying to ape it with the Mega Drive. Arcade and home standards were set by the likes of Virtua Racing, Ridge Racer and Daytona USA. There really wasn't a mainstream buzz around isometric racers - Super Skidmarks' success owed more to jumping on the "simple fun" bandwagon started by Micro Machines. I don't doubt there were some good ones out there, but compared to the technology emerging in the arcades and even Mode 7 on consoles, isometric racers were as dated as 2D shooters from the media's point of view.

This game definitely isn't as popular as it should be. Like TransatlanticFoe, I believe it was released too late on the system to make an impact or create any nostalgic memories.
I think it's a fantastic game, much better than RC Grand Prix. The graphics are great, it runs smooth, has a nice weapons/upgrade system, and is very playable. The variety of 2-player modes make it even more fun give it more replay value. You can definitely tell it's a SIMS game, who were in my opinion, easily the best developers for the system.

I can't be bothered to go grab my phone for a pic (downstairs, charging!), but it's this: Stamp says "limited edition featuring world cup teams".
