Thought it might be an idea starting a thread to discuss what games we can use for this years sega8bit event comp and the format I.e. xxxx game fastest time on level 1 or 2 player knock out etc.. I would suggest we need games/ levels that can be completed in under 5 - 10 mins as we had a bit of a 'situation' at the 2008 event with a certain sports game.. I'll start the ball rolling with these: Micro Machines: head to head knockout on any level. Alex Kidd in Miracle World: speed run on first level. Putt and Putter: 2 player on first lot of holes (could be over 10 mins if your not very good, just suggesting it as it might be my only chance of winning ;D ). Digger Chan: 1st level speed run. Pie slap: knockout. Mean Bean Machine: knockout. Feel free to dismiss some of these, I suggested most becuase I enjoyed ten at previous events. Ian - are you going to be creating a scoring mechanism again to keep track?

I'd suggest adding a shmup in there, too. We've had Power Strike before, so maybe something different. Perhaps Astro Warrior, or maybe even Action Fighter. After Burner? Perhaps something a bit more racey for a speed-run. Hang-On, Road Rash, etc. Digger Chan: 1st level speed run. ಠ_ಠ

How about a custom Digger Chan for the competition with a new level, to make it a bit fairer?
Glad to see Pie Slap in there, but we'd need to put a time limit on it (e.g. most points after 5 minutes or sudden death if equal) as with two matched players it can go on forever.
I'd be happy to hack some games to start on new levels for more interesting challenges, if we can get enough Everdrives/etc to play on, although that gives an advantage to emulator players over real hardware users for practising.

Action Fighter is a good shout. Maxim - could we not just PAR carts for accessing other levels? Great idea on a sega8bit event special edition of Digger Chan, a bit like what Nintendo used to do. It could just be one level with a timer on it. Aypok and/ or playgen could also make limited edition carts for sale to event attendees as a souvenir

Love the idea of a special cart like the Nintendo World Championships. Would it be possible to create a cart with 3 or so SMS games on it and have an accumulative score?
It could have like a 5-minute time limit and work something like: 1. Sonic - Get 50 rings 2. Hang On - Complete first stage 3. Columns - Many points as possible in the remaining time
You could spray the SMS cart gold and everything! It could be like a separate mini-competition where people have all day to post scores.

This sounds amazing but outside of spraying the carts gold I wouldn't be able to help much

Three different games on a cartridge isn't a problem, having an accumulative score running between them is something much more complex. Writing down the scores is the nice easy solution

I reckon we could pull it off technically if we had the hardware to make a multi-cart that was software-controlled so the code could switch to the next game. Doing it in a way compatible with generic hardware (where you can't switch out the first 1KB) would be really hard.

Is there anything you need to get this to go ahead?
An SMS World Championship cart would be so legendary if we could pull it off. As an incentive to get people playing the SMS, we could hold a high score competition for the general public (somehow) and give someone a chance to win a copy of the cart.
I'm probably being overambitious but I just think it's a great idea. I'm surprised no one's thought of it till now.

The main problem is that all SMS games need to have some special code at a particular location in the ROM, and if you have three games then either they need to be coded to share that location (like Hang On / Safari Hunt) or they need to be able to swap out what actually lives there (like Excellent Dizzy Collection).
I think it might be possible to achieve something using a Master Everdrive, depending on how flexible it is with its mapping compatibility, but I don't have one to test on. With a regular ROM replacement, like the Digger Chan carts, it'd be a lot harder.

2 player knockout comp of maybe GP Rider would be good as I love that game for some strange reason.
Speedy Gonazales speedrun would be awesome, play it at 60hz and it's just too fast but fun to play
Another good speedrun would be Marble Madness with the sports pad.
If you want a 2 player fighting game, why can't we have Master of Combat, much better than Double Dragon!
I think we need to do a 3D game this year and hook everybody up at once so they can watch. I like Blade Eagle but we could have Missile Defense so we use the light phaser as well.
I've never played Gangster Town so that would be a good one to play. In 1 or 2 player mode....

Are we going to finalise this? I need to get some practice in else I'll only win the Micro Machines part Ian, are you being the competition organiser again?

I reckon we should go for 6-7 games and try to get some breadth of genre in there; and attendees should nominate the game they think they'll have the best chance at. Have to have: - Micro Machines (one race head-to-head) <-- I shall defeat all comers - Pie Slap (two player) - Putt & Putter (first round two-player) <-- for rupert to not come last Other categories: - Sports - something two-player? - Shmup: Action Fighter? I can't even get to the flying part of that - Speedrun - probably a platformer. I vote for Lost Stars (it's actually fun as a speedrun), Speedy works too. Or run through the start of WB3? - Fighting - ideally not a game where knowing the combos makes a huge difference - Shooting - we've never had a phaser competition. For head-to-head games we should use a knockout system (harsh but won't take all day) and for score/speedruns we can do it in one game each. I can knock together some brackets if need be.

I'd be happy to organise and keep track of results like in previous years.
I definitely agree with Micro Machines, one of the best 2-player games on the system. Seeing as a few of you have been campaigning for Pie Slap for several years now, we'll add it in. I'm not so sure on Putt & Putter again though.
I'm pretty sure this was mentioned before, but I think a mini-event in honour of the Olympics would be a good idea. I was thinking we play Olympic Gold and everyone has a go at 100m, Hammer Throw and Archery. If we have 1 person at a time playing all 3 of the events I reckon we could get through it quick enough.
I love Hang-On so I wouldn't mind a speed-run/high score event for that.
I'm not sure if Action Fighter would work as getting a high-score in that would involve looping the level until the timer counts down. I'd suggest Bomber Raid, Scramble Spirits or something like that.
Master of Combat is a good shout for a fighting game. We've had Mortal Kombat and Double Dragon previously so it will be good to continue mixing it up. We're definitely not having any Pit Fighter (sorry Phil).
For a platforming speed run, how about 1st level on Sonic 2 (or any other level)?
I wouldn't mind a phaser game, but I've always had my doubts about the size of the room and size of the TVs to make it work fairly.
