Stolen pic from the internets, hoping I should get my hands on one soon but theres a few floating around in New Zealand. Does anyone know was there any difference of just the colour scheme and where they packed differently or with something?

This is a NTSC model, being sold in North America. They are quite rare in US though and some times people pay crazy money for them.

Hmmm, I've seen plenty of the grey ones in Australia too so not totally convinced it's a US NTSC model. The one above may be - I'm going from memory here.,
Unfortunately that's the most help I can be.

I've also seen many grey ones from Australia, but never cared about it. So, it may be a very late revision of PAL SMS2 forwarded to AU/NZ market. And possibly due to unsold stock finally Tec-Toy used it at SMS3 Compact:

I suppose underneath will be a region label (PAL/NTSC), but would be great to open it and take an inside photo of the circuit board. There may be something interesting.

OK folks, here it is. On both the under neath of the case and the board itself it states PAL! Anyone happen to know if the American model is grey all round? Cos the half where the board is regular SMS colour.

Got 2 of those here and 5 of the all black ones, I was under the impression the grey version was the NZ model, that is where one of mine came from, and the other one was listed on ebay as the grey New Zealand version...

The grey ones are the original SMS IIs manufactured in Japan during 1990/early 1991. Here's a Chinese one ( 3006-15 / PAL-D), and some French ones ( 3006-09 / RGB). Later in 1991 they outsourced SMS II manufacturing to China & Thailand, which made the more common black version (which probably never made it to the US as they discontinued SMS in 1991). SMS II was gradually released in different countries throughout 1990 and 1991, with some countries such as the UK not receiving it until late 1991, probably too late to receive the original Grey made in Japan model. I guess it depended on how much SMS I stock each country had. Looking at the SMS II service manual from April 1991 they list the following models; Territory Model No.
America MK-3006 Canada MK-3006-22 Australia MK-3006-03 N. Zealand MK-3006-04 China MK-3006-15 Germany MK-3006-18 France MK-3006-09 Most of those have grey variants, although neither Canada or Germany have been confirmed in this thread yet. Edit: Grey Canadian variant.
