I am disgraced to say it was 1999 when I first played on a Master System. Better late then never though!
I wasn't even sure what it was, I knew it was an old SEGA, that was it. I was 8, so I wasn't really that knowledgeable about these things, being born in 1991 really put me more in line with the Mega Drive than SMS.
It was a newer SMS with Alex Kidd built in. I didn't really enjoy it that much, Alex Kidd wasn't as good as the 8Bit Mario I grew up with, nor the 16bit Sonic games.
However, being a massive Mega Drive fan eventually led me to the Master System Converter, whereby I then bought R-Type, Sonic The Hedgehog and GoldenAxe Warrior, all awesome games, and probably some of the best games you can get for the SMS.
I'd like to own more, but I'm really picky about the games I buy for retro consoles. I like a good variation.

My first time actually playing the Master System was with a friend - he was one of those kids whose dad bought him everything he wanted (his mum died when he was about 5). He was the first kid I knew to have a Master System, Megadrive, and Mega CD. To add insult to injury he also had a SNES and a very powerful PC with dozens of great games.

My first SMS experience was with my own SMS2! And the first game I played was the built-in Alex Kidd! The system came with 3 extra free games (Super Tennis, Enduro Racer and TransBot) as a special Christmas pack. None of my friends had an SMS, but some nice advertisements on TV and magazines did the trick and preferred it over other systems. And a few months later a couple of friends bought an SMS2 as well after trying it at my home.
