Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I wasn't sure where to raise this question. I've recently had a discussion with somebody on how the scoring works in Sonic 1 and what is the lowest possible score you can get. I believe this the lowest score possible is 6800.
Complete the game with No Bonuses, emeralds and 1 Life remaining: 5000 Sky Base Act 2 - 10 Ring sign post: 1000 Complete each of the following levels with a single ring: 800 Green Hill Act 1,2 Bridge Act 1,2 Jungle Act 1,2 Labyrinth Act 1,2 You get a Robotnik sign post on Scrap Brain Act 1,2 and Sky Base Act 1. Finish Scrap Brain Act 3 with 0 rings. Do not kill any enemies or destroy any monitors. Then finish every level after 5:00 minutes have elapsed. Total: 6800
One person on RetroAchievements has claimed a score of 5500 without explaining how they got it. I don't see how they could possibly get such a low score unless there is a way to manipulate the sign posts to almost always get Robotnik. Normally when you end the level with 0 rings you get the 10 ring sign post like in Sky Base Act 2 where there are no rings. So unless I'm missing something I just don't see how this score is possible.
So I've had a look and my potential idea for reducing the score didn't work. I believe the lowest score possible is 6,800.
Getting 0 rings on Scrap Brain 3 though is extremely tough!
Thanks Ian. I'm highly skeptical about the claims of a lower score. It's actually surprisingly easy to inadvertently kill an enemy or collect an extra ring. Scrap Brain Act 3 is definitely the worst for rings since there's no way to take a hit. The last set of rings on the long conveyor belt are really difficult to avoid. I've seen a TAS do it, but I can't do it myself.
