Hey Sega Friends,
I'm working on a project that requires me to play SMS games with no music. I still want SFX.
Is this possible? Can anyone help me out with finding the PAR codes to make this happen? Or is there a better way? I'm a musician and have no hacking experience. The games I'm considering are Double Dragon and Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
I would prefer to do this on an actual SMS with a real Pro Action Replay, but PARs are really difficult to find. So I'll be using emulation. The only emulator that I've found that seems to support game hacks is MEKA. Is this correct?
Thanks! Chris

With Meka you can go into the sound options and choose which of the 4 channels you want on or off. Some games may have a separate channel used just for sound effects, but with most games what you'll probably find is that all channels are used for music and the sound effects just interrupt part of the music when they occur. So you can't simply turn off music alone, which turns out is the case for Ghouls and Ghosts and Double Dragon. You can however turn off half or more of the music, as sound effects will usually be on 1 or 2 channels.
Hacking a game to just have sound effects played is probably a quite tricky task, and I'd imagine beyond the bounds of a simple action replay code.

Thanks for your response. I'm aware of the four channel support in MEKA. And yeah, it doesn't quite work.
It could be tricky, and its definitely beyond my expertise. Though I recently found a Game Genie code for Super Mario Bros that eliminates all music and leaves the SFX. "GZIYGU" So I would think it'd be possible right?

As the Nes has an extra sound channel over the Master System, it may be that the sound effects are on their own separate channel, making it easier to hack. One of the more knowledgeable members on here or smspower will probably be able to tell you more on if its realistically doable or not though.
