My Master System has a fuzzy picture stemming from the RF connection at the back of the console. I can fiddle with it & get a somewhat clear picture (barring the barely-visible diagonal lines sweeping across the screen) but it's a chore to get it connected with no fuzz at all. Sometimes the picture cuts out entirely. I've tried cleaning the connection, but I'm not entirely sure what the best cleaning method is & everything I've tried has done nothing to solve the problem. Any suggestions?

But...I have an SMS 1. The only AV cable you can get for it has 1 audio channel, and I have surround sound so just one RCA audio input is gonna sound like utter faeces. :/

Hmmm.... I'm not sure what you have setup, but you can always get audio splitters to at least feed 2 stereo channels with the mono signal. I would worry more about the video quality though. Not really sure how you are getting a fuzzy signal with composite video.

Get an aftermarket AV cable, you can buy them with dual (still mono) audio connectors. At least this way you will get sound to both speakers. Mind you, even with the stock single audio cable you should still be able to achieve sound out of both speakers.
RF cables have a tendency to break down over time, or with too much bending etc, so the picture quality tends to degrade.

The SMS only does Mono sound output, its not like the Genesis/Mega Drive where you need the right cables to get stereo. Most TV's should output the MONO sound through all the speakers or at least the main two.

On my TV, with the single audio cable connected the TV switches to mono sound and outputs it from both speakers.

Slightly off topic I know...but this thread got me thinking. I used to have a lovely Scart lead for my old MD 1 that also doubled as a scart for my SMS, I gave that MD 1 to my brother, he moved to Australia and has that lead, now I have an MD 2 with a scart but sod all that is decent for my SMS as the sockets are different! I am having to use my SMS through RF, dopey mistake to make!! I hate RF for my SMS and at present can't find a scart on Amazon...... DOH!!

I had issues using a Mega Drive 1 RGB cable with my Master System due to the audio. I got one of those MD cables with the headphone connector so that you can obtain stereo audio from the front headphone jack on the MD. This cable obviously outputs no sound when connected to a MS so I had to buy yet another RGB cable. The one linked to above would obviously work fine in both systems, in retrospect I should have just bought one of those and obtained audio separately from the headphone jack on my MD.

I tell you, I just got a Genesis 1 AV cord, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE. I didn't have fuzzy pictures, but I had a TON of "waves" going across the screen as well as flicker I don't think was from the SMS itself. More like the picture was going in and out. I found an aftermarket one (they're still on eBay right now) for under 7 dollars, free shipping. Picture now is clear as a bell, and I've set my TV to push to both speakers. I'd highly suggest it. It's made gameplay SO much better. Can't recommend it enough!

Try hooking it up via RGB, then you will be truly blown away.

I think the quality of image depends quite a lot on the size of TV you have. On a smaller 14" CRT TV even RF can look really good (provided the RF lead isn't knackered) after all thats what most consoles were played on at the time. Larger TV's show up more interference and blurring so benefit more from a better signal, I wouldn't go back from RGB on my pretty big gaming TV now.
