Looks to me like he made that with Paint actually.

Great work as always Tears of Op Opa. Btw, Is that a Sega Challenge patch you scanned or something else? Yeah, I just made it up in paint. It was bugging me that this was the best picture of it. img196.imageshack.us/img196/4950/challenge112.jpgBetter than nothing I guess. That's the type of thing you could probably spend the next 10 years looking for and never find it. Even though I've played the games in question, I always love promotional stuff like this with screenshots. Kind of brings back the excitement of being young and staring at the pictures for hours wondering and wishing I could play them. You really don't see that sort of thing anymore, in the 80's it seemed like everything came with a poster or catalog trying to sell you more stuff.

I had a go at creating the patch too. In Photoshop with layers/fonts etc so if someone wants the file they can tweak it. I created it by hand and based it off this pic: I got it close but there's a few discrepancies. The (R) symbol is a little off, the SEGA logo is off (look at the A - namely the hole in the middle) the font is slightly off and I'm not 100% on the colours though that is easy to fix. Most of the layout/way things line up is pretty close though. Also, it's a higher resolution with less jaggies.

The jaggies are just the iron-on material it's printed on. Looks great though!

Unless anyone else has this patch Rupert is the only true member but the rest of us can now have a fake ID

Looking good. What font did you use to make that? The red text is using' Franklin Gothic Demi Cond'. The logo is just a standard 'SEGA' font. That picture is perfect! Wish I knew about it before, with it I'll be able to create a much more accurate copy.

Made a few adjustments with help from that great reference pic. It's pretty damn close now. The border and grid lines are near perfect. Realigned the text a little, it's better than before but still a little off. For easier visual reference, here's the original patch:

Not sure why the both of you are making the same thing, but objectively, I'd say that Tears of Opa Opa has one that looks most like the original one. Best thing would just to take the original pad and clean it up in paint or photo shop.

Unfortunately I think we both wasted our time, I asked Rupert if it was alright to use his iron-on patch picture and he seems ok with it. I didn't want to use that scan with the watermark, because of the watermark it would seem like stealing it without permission.
I also added the pictures of the 87 catalog and put it in promo hand outs. My guess is that's what it is but if we find out later that it was in fact included with some systems I'll move it.

What would be cool would be to make a big image on a shirt using that design, silk-screened.

What would be cool would be to make a big image on a shirt using that design, silk-screened. That's exactly what my friend who helped with the hint sheets does. I think we would need a minimal order but it's a good idea if there's enough people interested. I can at least ask him to see what he says. Here's the site. www.monkeyinadryer.com/
