I'm just after a list of SMS RPG games for when I finish my play through of Phantasy Star. If someone can recommend something, that'd be great.

I suppose that really depends on your definition of RPG, but the following titles have some adventure/RPG elements to them:
Dragon Crystal Golden Axe Warrior Golvellius - Valley of Doom Heroes of the Lance King's Quest Lord of the Sword Miracle Warriors: Seal of The Dark Lord SpellCaster Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar Y's: The Vanished Omens
I'm not a huge RPG fan, but I'd imagine Ultima IV would probably be the closest thing to Phantasy Star. You could possibly even say that Wonder Boy III and Zillion have some RPG elements to them as well.

Stream of conscience summaries of each:
Y's is the most cinematic and well-written of the bunch after Phantasy Star, Golden Axe Warrior is the largest and most accessible, Golvellius has the most variety and the best music, SpellCaster has some decent puzzles and an interesting blend of point-and-click and side scrolling action, Lord of the Sword is the shortest but also a pretty well-done side scroller in the Zelda II vein, Dragon Crystal is a rogue-like with randomly generated levels and fixation on easy grinding, King's Quest is an ugly, shoddy, point-and-click mess, Heroes of the Lance is shallow and boring, Miracle Warriors is decent but the tile-based exploration is really dated today and Ultima IV is good but pales in every respect to other RPGs on the system, it really doesn't have any standout qualities like the others.
There are some Japanese SMS games that fit within the RPG genre, and they're all pretty good (and mostly translated into english via ROM). High School Kimengumi! is cute, Sukeban Deka II has another interesting blend of point-and-click and action, and The Story of Mio has some charm to it. Anmitsu Hime is a neat game, but it was localized as Alex Kidd: High-Tech World and despite some frustrations is a really fun and challenging game that should be classified as an RPG. I still yearn to play Tensai Bakabon, which looks to be the craziest of the lot.
Perhaps what made SMS games so good was that SEGA always had a way of bringing RPG elements (be it money and upgradable equipment, leveling up or learning new skills) to games that traditionally did not have them. You look at some of the classics like Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Wonder Boy III, Kenseiden, Zillion, Fantasy Zone, etc. and they've all got them.

The only RPGs I've really enjoyed are Golvellius and Spellcaster. Wonder Boy III has RPG elements too and is great. I've tried the other games and never liked them (including Phantasy Star) but can understand their appeal. One game off that list that is so unplayable is Heroes of the Lance. Awful. It's too difficult, the controls are dreadful and I have no idea what I'm doing. The manual is no help either.

Yeah, Heroes of the Lance really sucked. It is probably the worst game on the system and should never have been released...

Last year played Miracle Warriors and enjoyed that. Dragon Crystal as said is roguelike, to play on one sitting. I've had it some 30 years and just recently first time got to last level (30), but still couldn't finish...
High School Kimengumi! and Story of Mio are more adventure than RPG. Nice games nevertheless.
