I'll condense the posts when I've worked out how to do it. Only got a few minutes now before I have to go out. I think it's a trivial matter to max this game out, to be honest. I would imagine that anyone who can finish it (99% of players!) could do this very quickly. Don't worry Ian... just wanted to show how messed up this game's score really is- it's taken me about 20 year to get the chance! Perhaps it would be more of a challenge to show (effectively what was here before I stuck my boot in) the highest *displayed* score in the game (i.e. before it ticks over)? That's a bit more aof a challenge.

I've been trying to figure this out but I won't pretend to fully understand the scoring system. However, I believe this may shed some light on whats going on with the score.
When you beat Opapa you're awarded around 1,000,000 points for each life you have left, including the one in play at the time. The money you have left also seems to turn into points.
Try playing without buying any extra lives and see what happens with the score at the first loop. You'll most likely end up with a score around 4,000,000 give or take depending on how much money you have left and how many extra enemies you kill.
I think the reason that game on page 2 starts stage 17 with 300k is because you are killing Opapa with about 10 lives? (1 in play and 9 extra ships) That equals 10,000,000 points. The game can only read a high score of 9,999,990
OK, so as an example You reach Opapa on the second loop with say 9,000,000 and you kill him and cash in on say 11,500,000 points from your extra men, your money and your score of killing enemies. That's a total of 20,500,000. What just happened is you crossed the line of going from Opapa to the first stage again with having flipped the score twice in one crossing. So your score is displayed as 500,000 plus 2 flips of the score.
Again, try playing without ever buying an extra ship and see what happens at the loops.

I'm still proud to say I rolled the score on Fantasy Zone... first game I've ever rolled the score on. I was on wave 47 when I got Game Over. Attachments:

Here's my high score. I ended it at round 201. I put a few extra pics for anyone who might not believe me. I also took a few pics of the heavy bomb price to show it was the same game and the price kept going up as I bought them. You can also clearly see I could have bought 2 extra men in the round 200 picture but I was getting tired of playing. Round 96 Round 100 Round 101 Round 133 Round 192 Round 199 Round 200 Round 201 Round 201 shop and final heavy bomb price By the way the score is keeping an accurate count. It just depends on how much you cash in on when you beat Opapa that makes it seem messed up.

Haha, how long did that take? Don't know if I could be bothered even attempting that, not a fan of Fantasy Zone really. Only ever got to level 3 before the boredom set in... I might give it another go after I've finished with Power Strike, see if I can at least manage to join the 9,999,990 club .

I was just going to get the 9,999,990 and take a picture so I didn't really pay attention to the time, for some reason I just kept going. It had to be 4-5 hours. I have a clock sitting on top of the TV but I didn't think to show it in the pics until it was to late.

Only ever got to level 3 before the boredom set in... Blasphemy! Haha! I can appreciate why people love this game, but I suppose nostalgia plays a big part for a lot of people. The graphics are big and nice which means when replaying the game you loved as a child you end up getting the same feelings of joy. I've never been a big fan of side scrolling shmups and this one's cutesy setting appeals to me even less than most. I am going to give this a replay though so who knows, maybe i'll find what everyone else has and change my mind .

Nostalgia definitely plays a big role for me! But it's amazing, I remember the game being way more colorful as a kid!
Plus I Looooooved Defender & Defender II for the 2600 so this was like a better version of the game... on acid!
Don't know why they didn't/don't make more shooters like this, it's like the equivalent of GTA for space shooters, the open ended environment concept, you can accomplish your mission or just fly wherever you want shooting baddies collecting money waiting to to see what will spawn next! But ironically the side view/top down shooters are the mainstay even tho they are technically "rail-shooters" where in the path is always the same with enemies patterns the same... but for some reason when it's done in FirstPerson it gets a bad name but from side view/top down perspective it's more accepted...

Zillion is pretty wicked. I've never actually watched the anime, so I'm going to have to check some more of these out. ;D
