List of Countries and Person Resonsible for Writing:
US: Stan, Tears of Opa Opa Canada: grolt UK: rupert (I hope, PMed) Australia: tycho, ddevilfingers Japan: drrtoule Korea: schlingel Germany: Spain: Brazil: Italy: France: drrtoule
Well, I finally got some others interested in this idea, so I figured I'd make it public. It was talked about a long time ago, but no one really seemed to want to put the time in it. Just brainstorming now, but the idea would be to have a permanent site page, similar to the character page, giving some cool details on the Master System's release in various countries. What I'm thinking so far (to be updated based on interest and others' ideas):
1. A separate page for each country with a header graphic, like you see for the characters.
2. As detailed a history as possible for each country about the Master System's release there, paying attention to space. No need to give EVERYTHING, just enough so the reader has a clear idea. Initial release, reception, box variants, why they existed, and so forth (grolt's idea).
3. This will include pictures (not concise, just a few) of box differences, special releases, controllers. etc.
4. Also to be included would be any information concerning the fan base. Were their any magazines? Fan clubs through Sega? For example, in the US we have the Team Newsletters, run by John Sauer.
5. The only difficulty I see is making sure each country has data backed up by some sort of sites or contact with people who used to work in the thick of it. Obviously, since I've talked to John Sauer and Steve Hanawa, anything we write in the US history section will be backed by facts we've had verified. This may not be so easy for other countries.

Great idea. As we discussed, I'm certainly on board for articles on the US and Canada. I don't know about corroborating facts, since I'd more be writing from experience documenting the many interesting differences the SMS had in each country. Like Captain Silver having different box art and an edited game in the US, or Irwin packaging their own stuff in Canada.
What I'd certainly like to see, and think is quite important, would be discussions about the releases and the different "waves". Like how the US had the plain jane covers, then the bolder ones with more art, then the Tonka stuff, then the later SEGA releases with the triangle and finally the re-releases. Then talk about what sort of things came with the games, how the seals were, etc. etc. so it becomes a real collector's resource and something that will make collecting different country libraries an accessible thing.
I think these run the risk of being epically long, but as long as we break them into sections and keep things focused with images, headings, etc. I think these will be invaluable.
I know there are some guys here who specialize in different categories, like Australian Ozisoft games, Portuguese purples, Tec Toy, Korean, etc. so hopefully you guys can step up too and help write so we really get a definitive worldwide document of the Master System's history. Who else is in?

Cool, updated the list above a bit. Just send me what you have once you get it together. I can help with the US stuff too since I figured out the mystery behind the blues, as well as the whole issue with Tonka and the intial release of the system. Should be awesome!

Okay, now that I'm closing in on the general completion of the games database, I finally want to get this project moving. I've updated the start of this thread with a list of people who have offered to help, as well as countries that I'd like to make separate entries for. If you're interested in writing for a particular section, just let me know.
Edit: The list I've created above takes into consideration the MAJOR areas of release. Some smaller areas could be consolidated into others.

I'll certainly try to help out with the Canadian releases. But to be honest it was a search for Canadian release info that led me to this site (which I'm very glad to have found), I'm still only midway-ish with my findings though...

I can contribute to a UK section, as a "primary source" of sorts - having been a young gamer in what was essentially the console's heyday in its prime market and witnessed the "Master System II" Sonic 2 sleeve in person in retail.
I'll see if I can get my stock of Sega Force/Master Force and GamesMaster magazines from my folks' loft over xmas, some good stuff in there on mail order suppliers, release info and cross-platform games.

I don't mind sharing any info I might have about the US set but it looks like you guys have that covered. Unfortunately, my knowledge outside of the US set is very limited. I know a little about Canada and have a friend I can ask about Canadian SMS.

I'd love some help on the US section man, no problem there. Do you have any experience with design at all? If not, no big deal, I'd love to have more than just my input on that part if you don't mind doing the write-up or something. Let me know!

Got your PM, Stan, and will definitely work on the Canadian page. Time is a little tight right now, but in the new year I'll be able to dig deeper into it.

Yes I'll help with Australia. I am pretty sure ddevilfingers might want to as well. I'm more than happy to help in any way I can. When I'm back home in January I'll look into where I might be able to dig up some info as outlined in your first post...

I m involved in french market.
According to me Pro Yakyuu Pennant Race is quite common, it often pop up on japanese yahoo auction. I have almost the japanese full set and I have a friend who has the whole set including great ice hockey. I think we can build together a good rating of japanese set if required.
