I get a message advising I MUST log in to view the forum, i.e. cant browse it not logged in..
Is this a new thing? I don't recall a discussion?

Sorry, I decided to see if this would work. You guys probably didn't notice it, but we were getting hit by World of Warcraft spammers and it was bugging the hell out of me. Only so many IPs I can block. If it becomes too much of a problem I'll have to lift it.

Yeah, not too sure this is the best way to stop spammers Stan, if they want to spam somewhere they will find a way to do it. The best us mere mortals can do is minimise the damage done by them by not responding to them, and deleting them.
I guess anything is worth a try though.
Just to clarify, discussion over every change in the forum is not required. If the admin/mod is acting in the best interest of the forum why would there need to be?

Fair enough, not too problematic and I hate spammers.

Yeah, and just to clarify a bit, this wasn't a human as far as I know. I checked the IPs and tracked them and two were locations where no humans exist unless they're bums, insane or dead and buried cold cases. Pretty sure it was a bot, especially because it kept using the guest feature in only two parts of the forum consistently.

I didnt realise we had a spam problem so of course this a proactive way of tackling that until another solution can be arranged. I was only trying to promote some user involvment in admin disiscions - not to cause an argument or to be seen as some kind of union against the managment

I'm finding this a bit of an annoyance, I'm not bothered when i'm on the PC but it's a proper pain in the ass to get into the forum using my phone, and as i don't have easy access to a PC at work thats what i'm stuck with .

Hmmm, okay, perhaps I should have mentioned it first. I wasn't certain how much of a problem it would be, and since it wasn't too much spam, I'll lift it to see if it comes back. No problems at all rupert, feel free to always bring up anything I do if you feel it isn't right.
Edit: Okay, lifted it. If the spam appears again, I'll leave it so you can see it, perhaps someone knows a little about getting rid of them, but I doubt it. It wasn't too annoying getting rid of them, as you can see, you guys didn't even notice.

I've been deleting a few spam messages in the introductions sub-forum lately. There seemed to have been a big influx of them over a few days. I haven't seen any in a few weeks though, so I'm not sure if it's because you put this into practice or if these things just go in waves. I'd probably say a little of both.

Was it the World of Warcraft bots? They'd be long, long messages with stuff about raising levels and crap with links at the end.

It was a long message and there were too veiled links within the final paragraphs, but it was more just talking about general things that didn't even really make much sense. Not just keywords, but something pretty obtuse.

Grolt just informed me that more spam messages appeared after I lifted the ban. Did you guys happen to see them? What forum were they in and what were the IPs?

Grolt just informed me that more spam messages appeared after I lifted the ban. Did you guys happen to see them? What forum were they in and what were the IPs? Most of them seem to come into the Introductions forum. The other I deleted was in Master System Development. They were both by guest users, but I didn't think to grab the IP. I'll do that next time.
