This isn't exactly what you're looking for, but I have to show this picture of my SMS. It's a Tonka model, came in a box just like the one pictured in the post above. However, unlike every other SMS I've seen, the front panel isn't red, it's like washed out reddish orange with yellowish orange squares in a grid pattern. It's been like it since I got it in 1990, however I got it from my uncle who owned it for a few years himself, but he only had it a few years and barely played it which is why he gave it to me. Anyone else have an SMS like this? *Edit* After looking at the box again, I realize that's the 'Base System', mine was the 'Master System'... but it did have that blue pixely design on the front and English only packaging, so I assume it was Tonka... my sister destroyed that box circa 1992... Hmmm, are you sure it wasn't earlier, before Tonka was handling it? I hestitate to say that isn't because of sun damage or something, but it looks strange. The pattern is too consistent, but perhaps it has something to do with the adhesive under it.

That is indeed interesting.
It could be sun damage. It does look severely faded and Stan's glue theory may have some merit to it, but I am by no means an adhesives expert.
I'll put a console in direct sunlight for the next few years and report back.

Here's one on ebay with the same pattern. cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Master-System-Complete-Box-w-20-Games-/200556688137?pt=Video_Games&hash=item2eb21c3309

Hmmm, not sure actually. Do we know if the SMSII was by chance the ONLY system they refurbished in the Master System era?

I'm not sure to be honest. The console itself had had one chip replaced in it and a qc check sticker on the circuit board. Nothing else to indicate anything really. It was however obvious which chip was done as it had a groove along the face of it. I've only seen 2 of these before both sms2 I'm not even 100% sure it was done by sega either possibly a 3rd parting that fixed them on there behalf selling them off?
