Theres a box that should be on your SMS ariel cable that has a switch, make sure its set the right way, other than that try tuning, hope this helps.

if its an new TV then you might have trouble tuning it in. I cannot use my sms on my LCD tv at all, got to use an older tv. Other than that try moving the ariel cable about abit in the back of the sms, as ive got one thats abit faulty that you can only really use if you prop the cable up on a game box or somthing.

okay, not having the little box with a switch wont be the issue as all that does is let you watch TV without having to swap cables. So if you try a diffrent connector and still get the same problem then I guess you may have a faulty system

Sadistic I'm not too sure he needs that switch if he's just tring to get the thing working. All it does it switch from TV to SMS so you dont have to swap your cables about to watch abit of telly or play your sms

Who knows, maybe the sms thing is a bit different. And I just manually search for the channel on the tv, no idea if it has a specific channel, read the manual of the sms.

You don't need the switcher box - any RF lead will do. As Rupert said; the box is just for ease of changing from TV to SMS.
The default channel varies from TV to TV, but on some of mine it was indeed channel 36 - which is around 591MHz (I think).
If you haven't done so already, try a different RF lead.
Do you have any other consoles with which you could test? Something like a MegaDrive would be ideal, but an Amiga or SNES should do the trick (they all use the same type of RF cable). If you do - plug it into the TV and find the channel with them - remove the RF lead from the other console and stick it into the SMS.
If you're still getting static, try a different PSU - the MegaDrive (MkI) PSU is fine. Maybe the SMS isn't getting power, or something.

Which model of the console have you got? If its the original model that also plays card games, then you have a second video output to use. Its the same connector the original megadrive/genesis uses. You can easily get cables to plug into this connector which then gives you yellow and white AV connectors to plug into your TV. This will give you a much better image over RF anyway. RF units in consoles can break, although its not that common in master system consoles.

Well if your master system looks like this: Then you can use a cable like this:
