If you all take a look at the main page, you will notice something I hoped would never happen when I started this all 5 years ago.
I hope my message explains things for you. I am currently in the process of finding someone to take the torch, and I have a few people in mind, but for now, I hopem you all can continue as you have on these boards.
Anyway, if there are any ill feelings toward me, I'm sorry. SegaMasterSystem.com has been a major part of my life, and I cherish all of you who have contributed to make it the best hang out for SMS lovers. It was a blast for me. It will be a blast for the next man.
Keep gaming friends.

It's a shame, I've spent many a happy hour reading over sms.com! Remeber the caption competitions? They were ace!
So, where do we go from here? Who will take over?
Massive thanks to Tyler for running the site, we all know it's rekindled hundreds of peoples intrest in our beloved Sega Master System. This site under Tylers ownership truly has "kept the system alive". Lets hope it's kept alive for years to come under whoever takes over.

This news hasn't surprised me so much, but what has is how taken aback I am by that confirmation there - I've genuinely come down a little now, after reading that message on the main page. This is a shame, and it's nothing for anyone to be gloating about, if you know what I mean.
I was just listening to Mogwai's "I know you are but what am I?" when I found out - I've loved that since I first heard it, 'cause I've always felt a peculiar master system vibe coming from it, but it's also very eerie and melancholy - and what with the weather here (thunder, lightning, and snow, together) it's all been strangely affecting.
Let's not rush into tacking a replacement onto the forum, or handing over the keys to someone with a decent fansite. Over the coming weeks, we can talk about what happens from now.

Me too, I was talking to Tyler online and I was like you need to do something man, the peasants are restless. He's like I did, so I checked the main page and was seriously depressed a bit by it. It hit kind of hard. So then I annoyed him some more and we talked. At least he's not selling his SMS stuff. I wonder who will be in control now?

Hey, come on now, obviously he has much to do, and having talked to him off and on recently, I know he does. Someone will be taking over, don't worry.

We've all been deeply saddened by this, but if you think about it it was inevitable... the updates started to get further and further apart as early as Ver2, and the site disappeared completely after Ver3. After that when you accessed the site it said "Ver4 coming soon" and had a date... then it just said "coming soon" and there was no date... and now it's gone. The SMS community as a whole has been in a coma for a couple of years now; the other "big" SMS site, the Ela Fountain, hasn't been updated since the summer of '03. I emailed the creator of that site, Thoja Enwizz recently and he said something in his reply that I think is appropriate for this discussion: "The problem is most of the sms sites that are still active nowadays are pretty nutsty with nothing new to offer. What we need is a bit of creativity, new ideas, fresh air and a little sense of humour. Who knows? Maybe the SMS scene will resurrect in a few years and will be as interesting as it was in 1998-2001." Since the site is dead, I think ShinobiMan should at least post links to the site archives (I know he has them), so we can at least take a stroll down memory lane and see what once was the biggest SMS site on the net. Maybe he'll even post a link to the progress he made on Ver4, but I doubt it. Bye segamastersystem.com... it was a great 5 years.

Although I think harking back to a golden age of sega master system websites is faintly ridiculous, I find myself agreeing with some of what this guy and Thoja are saying. There is quite a lack of humour, fun-loving, and innocence on a lot of these sites now, and this is a gap which needs filling. On the other hand, some sites are so slack and ' it's-only-a-bit-of-fun'-oriented that a load of fatheads have just come onto it, taken the pi ss, and completely taken over - the review section at alexkidd.com being a case in point. I was about to suggest making the SMS.com archives available myself, if only to continue using the best bits from earlier versions when the site is being rebuilt.

So Thoja is not going to update anymore? Well, he hasn´t updated since 15 January of 2003. I think I emailed him, but I got no answer. I just visited his site yesterday. Another great one dead This is a thing that I don´t understand. While the Atari community is very strong, the Master System one is dying, the Snes one is almost non-existant, and the Genesis and Nes communities are dissapearing too.

Well here in Germany we have one big Sega Community, while the site (Planet Sega) doesn't have much things to offer, only some reviews of games and news about new Sega games, the community is strong and alive, talking about various things and even try to create new games, one of it is Landstalker 2 for MD. So it shouldn't be a problem to hold a community for a old console alive....
For a SMS site there are a lot of things to keep the site and the system alive. SMS.com had some great ideas like the picture contest and the battle-arena, take user written reviews like on sega8bit.com, put in some scans of adverts or magazine reviews, try to get interviews with the creators of the old games (its hard but not impossible) and the site should be alive and interesting enough for everyone in the community. On thing i always wanted to see was a big database for alle Master System Games, like the one at genesiscollective.com. As a webmaster you just need fantasy to create a great site to keep the community interested in the site and the system.
