i prefer going right all the way,but if you pick a route and stick to it you'll soon learn it and get your time down

Hmmmm, ian is good with photoshop... I'm going to give it another go tonight, seems like I've been playing every night and I can't make it further than two laps before the end. I don't have any shifting problems, I just can't seem to not crash, some of those turns happen at the worst time on hills and such.

Hmmmm, ian is good with photoshop... I'm also very honest too Those were pretty good runs, no major crashes so I guess they may be hard to beat. Some routes give you more points than others. I remember completing it in a quicker time than the one in my top score picture but had less points because I went a different route. I'm not sure what advice to give you Stan. The road signs should prepare you for what way you're going to turn. It can be tricky because some turns are sharper than others so you have to react quickly and use the brake if you start skidding out wide.

Like the vast majority of old-school games, I think it would be better to try and memorize the routes rather than strictly rely on controller response. That is to say, try to plan ahead. For example, there's that windey S-turn near the end of the first section...if I was to ignore the existence of that turn each time I played (i.e. not remember it was there), I'd probably flip the car 75% of the time. But because I know it's there, I can plan ahead and react accordingly. Success in this game is the result of repeated playing and knowing what to expect IMO.

I got double that figure Ian! No not really. Get yourself the Control Stick. IT IS THE BEST CONTROLLER FOR OUT RUN. Didn't they package both together?

You can't be serious. Did you really try it with that blasted thing? I still can't seem to beat this game, it seems like memorization is quite necessary, but it aggravates me, the margin of error is too damn small. Must beat it... Screw it, I just gave it a go and I cannot get past the third to last segment, I keep getting to right before you pass the line and that's it. I noticed some other issues I have with this game.
1. You slow down WAY too fast when you let loose the gas. I mean, we're talking like 290 to 0 in about three seconds. Yeah right.
2. Because of this, you can't try to save time and wrecks by pumping the button.
3. Braking is worthless, you're better off letting go the speed.
4. I hate how when you're at the end of your time it just says Game Over. THANKS. That's what I always liked about Rad Racer, if you wrecked here and there, you could speed up and try to count on the last few seconds, because your car slowly loses speed and oftentimes this allows you to still cross the line and continue. Out Run is just like feck you spiderpig with large eyes, you done now. Game Over, das it spiderpig with large eyes. What the hell?

I only played this on my megadrive, and for the record, you can choose your tracks there too on the radio tuner. Easy as hell on megadrive. By the looks of it it, it's a lot harder on SMS.

Out Run is really easy...completed it the other month with Handle Controller & Footpedals - I did all routes.
I guess being a gaming champion it would be easy for me! ;D

I first played this game on my Commodore 64. Later, I acquired one for the SMS and it blows it away. It did a great job with the 3D look to scenery and plays smoothly.

This game was my summer of 1988 on the SMS! No Out Run version 8 or 16 bit could touch it until the Saturn version appeared in 1996!

The Saturn version is the best on the Sega Ages Disc

However, I still think it's a fun game to pop in for like 20 minutes or so. I dig it.

How do you cheat in Out Run?
I was able to finish all the courses back in the day. I recently started playing again and am a bit rusty, but almost finished course B last night.
The thing about Out Run is, yeah, you could say it requires memorization... but what racing game doesn't? It's all about learning the courses. But even if you memorize the courses and where the other cars are on a perfect run, it's all thrown off if you mess up... suddenly you're encountering traffic in places where you previously wouldn't have. So you've just got to be able to react to the positions of other cars quickly. It's at its most difficult when you're cresting a hill, but it simply requires some caution. If you're unwilling to ever lift off the accelerator, the beautiful drive is not gonna be so beautiful.
Is the game unfairly difficult? No. It's an elegant expression of free will in the post-modern era... one with tremendous philosophical ramifications. Especially that damn BMW that keeps getting in my way.
